Carbon Reduction Commitment

    The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is a mandatory climate change and energy saving scheme for large businesses. The UK-wide scheme legislates on CO2 emissions not already covered by Climate Change Agreements and the EU Emissions Trading System. Its aim is to help the country meet the emissions reduction targets set in the Government's Climate Change Act as well as to generate a shift in awareness.

    CRC applies to you if you have a half hourly meter (HHM) and annual electricity consumption of 6,000 MWh (£500,000). In which case, you need to buy allowances to offset your carbon emissions and you'll probably need to do the following:-

  • Report your business consumption to the Government on an annual basis
  • Ensure you understand your obligations: financial fines for failing to comply could run into thousands of pounds

Climate Change Levy

    The Climate Change Levy (CCL) was established by the UK government in 2001 in response to the Kyoto Commitment, to encourage business and the public sector to improve energy efficiency. The new legislation means that a levy is charged on energy used in the non-domestic sector, with the aim of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.
