Renewable Energy
Against a backdrop of growing concern about climate change and the need to secure future energy supplies, our parent company Centrica has made a significant commitment to develop renewable assets as part of its energy portfolio.Wind power is currently the most economically viable and scaleable renewable energy source.
Our investment
In July 2003 Centrica announced plans to invest in renewable energy generation assets, primarily offshore wind farm developments. We will continue to keep other forms of renewable energy generation under review.
Centrica is also investing in a range of power purchase agreements with renewable electricity developers and financiers, which will increase the amount of green electricity that we buy through offtake contracts in the UK over the next five years. These projects cover a diverse range of renewable energy technologies such as wind, landfill gas and biomass generation.
Current developments
Centrica is currently investing in six offshore wind farm developments, one of which, Barrow Offshore Wind, is now operational. Two others, Lynn and Inner Dowsing, are consented and offshore construction is underway. The remainder (Lincs, Race Bank and Docking Shoal) are subject to consent, which will be based on detailed environmental impact assessments.
Two wind farms are operational onshore in Scotland, the wholly owned Glens of Foudland wind farm in Aberdeenshire, and Braes of Doune wind farm in Stirlingshire, a joint venture with Airtricity.
Barrow is a joint venture development with the Danish energy group DONG; all other projects are wholly owned by Centrica.
