Warm Air Systems
Warm air systems heat a property by supplying warm air into the rooms through vents in either the ceiling or walls. The air is heated via a warm air unit by the burning of gas and the transfer of the heat from this process being mixed with air, which is then circulated around the property via a series of ducts (in the ceiling and roof space). Due to the nature of the product they are predominantly installed as part of the building structure and therefore are often unsuitable when not part of the original property design.
Advantages
- Very fast warm-up times, highly responsive, ideal for timber framed houses with little thermal mass.
- There is no water to leak or freeze.
- No radiators are required.
- The system may include Electrostatic air filters that are beneficial for asthmatics.
- Cooling may be easily incorporated, via cooling units or drawing in cooler outside air.
Disadvantages
- Re-routing ductwork after installation may be difficult.
- Wet rooms need to be treated carefully at duct design stage to avoid re-circulating odours.
- Unless a total renovation, warm-air is generally more difficult to implement in existing properties.
- The system balance may be affected when windows are left open with the sensors not sensing representative temperatures or humidity.
- Ducting needs adequate insulation to prevent condensation occurring.
- British Gas do not currently install new Warm Air systems, but can recommend local partners who will be able to offer this service.
