3D Secure is an added layer of security for online credit and debit card transactions. It was developed by Visa® and MasterCard® to guard against unauthorised use of cards while shopping online. It works on the same principle as 'chip and pin'. It performs an extra authentication step to protect your card from unauthorised users online by asking you to enter a password before completing your transaction. Your online transaction will only be authorised when you provide your password.
How does it work?
If you haven't already, you'll be asked to register for 3D Secure when you top up online. You'll automatically be sent to a page on your card provider's website. They'll ask you to answer a number of security questions and enter a password - which you'll use this for all your future online transactions. It's completely secure - only you and your card provider know your security details. Your information is never shared with us.
Once you have registered with your card provider and chosen your password, you'll never have to register your card again. In future you'll be automatically prompted to enter your password each time you top up online. After confirming that your personal message is correct, simply type in your password to complete your transaction.
What is a personal message?
As part of the payment verification process, you'll see a personal message or greeting that you created when you signed up to 3D Secure. Only you and your card provider know what the message is. If the personal message is incorrect you shouldn’t enter your password and you should contact your card provider immediately.
What do I do if I forget my password?
If you forget your password you can easily reset it - the exact process will depend on your card provider. In most cases, you'll see a 'Forgot your password?' link. When you click the link, you'll be asked for some information that you provided when you registered. Your password will then be securely and instantly reset, and you'll be able to carry on with your online transaction.
How will 3D Secure change the online top up process?
The only change to topping up online will be that you're prompted to enter your 3D Secure password to complete your transaction.
What if I've already stored my card details with British Gas?
If you've already stored your card details, you'll need to do this again but only once.
What if I’ve already registered for 3D Secure?
If you’ve already registered, you'll simply be asked for your password before you top up.
For more information on 3D Secure, please contact your card provider directly.
