We are investing £26 million each year in the British Gas Engineering Academy. In 2006, we trained around 1,000 new engineers and we offer advanced and refresher training for our 8,500 qualified engineers, at one of our eight training centres or seven mobile training units.

We have also recruited more than 300 long-term unemployed and lone parents during the past four years , as well as more than 450 apprentice recruits during last year.

We have also introduced an interactive computer-based training programme to deliver the key gas gas technical knowledge required to carry out day-to-day work activities safely and with confidence.

Academy of Customer Excellence

Customer service sets us apart in our marketplace. The British Gas Academy of Customer Excellence underpins our aim to put customers at the heart of everything we do. The Academy provides training for front-line employees in British Gas Residential and British Gas Services.

Building on the success of our engineering academy, the customer service academy encourages best practice and knowledge sharing. By co-ordinating activities nationally, this new structure improves the consistency of our training design and delivery.

Occupational Health

Our occupational health (OH) programme aims to prevent ill heath arising from work activities and promote wellness among our employees. This includes ensuring a good fit between the person and the job and recommending any suitable adjustments.

Our approach is to take action through practical support and training by raising awareness of work-related health issues and encouraging personal responsibility for all aspects of health, at work and more widely.

Diversity and inclusion

Awareness training continued for employees across British Gas through an online learning package. Another main programme has been improving cultural awareness, particularly to support our growing international operations.

As a result, the British Gas Engineering Academy has won an award from Women into Science and Engineering as well as a national award from the Council for Registered Gas Installers (CORGI) for its efforts to encourage and attract women into the workforce and into plumbing and associated trades.
