Make-A-Wish
In May 2010, our employees voted for Make-A-Wish® Foundation UK as the British Gas Charity of the Year. The partnership ended in October 2011 and we were thrilled to raise £470,000, contributing significantly to the £5.5 million that Make-A-Wish needed to raise in 2011.
Chris Jansen, Managing Director for British Gas Services and Commercial comments: “From skydiving to cake sales, our people brought pride and passion to their fundraising. So many of our teams rose to the challenge, which is something that British Gas and Make-A-Wish are both very proud of.”
Neil Jones, Chief Executive of MAW UK: “Make-A-Wish exists for the single purpose of granting magical wishes to these children and British Gas helped to fulfil that purpose. We thank its staff whole heartedly for their generous support as we create memories that our children and their families will remember for a lifetime”.
Save the children
Since partnering with Save the Children in 2002, we’ve invested £1.5 million into projects that make a real difference to families of children living in poverty in the UK.
This includes a crisis fund offering cash grants to ease the financial burden of families with children. We also support the ‘In My Back Yard’ programmes in Cardiff and Glasgow, which aim to empower young people in communities affected by poverty to make a positive impact.
Partnership working through our ‘Here to Help’ scheme
Charities such as Age UK, Carers UK and RNIB have helped provide specialist support and services to our most vulnerable customers
since 2004.
More recently, we have been working together to help keep vulnerable people warm, well and reduce their energy bills through free energy advice and insulation.

Welfare to Work
Welfare to Work providers are private companies that try to find work for the UK’s long term unemployed. Funded by the government, they find, motivate and match people to jobs which they have a good chance of staying in. We work very closely with these providers to ensure that the applicants for our vacancies have the right attitude and skills to succeed.
Community support in India
We have been running operations in India for over three years and have sought to extend our values and principles to our Indian partners by encouraging our people to contribute to local projects in the wider community.
Noida
In Noida we support the OM Memorial School ( The OM Foundation is an Indian NGO) which seeks to provide quality education to children living in the local slums whose families earn less that 3000Rs per month. The foundation established the OM school providing a structured primary school education in English. British Gas has contributed to the expansion of the Om foundation's vision by fundraising and supporting the development of the secondary school.

Pune
In Pune, we've partnered with Deep Griha, an independent charitable organisation, which is working to better the lives of children from the rural village as well as some of the orphans who are studying at Deep Griha. Centrica is helping through funding and supporting the building of a primary section of the school and we are hoping for this to be completed by mid-2012.
