British Gas offers free insulation to the over 60s

British Gas is giving away £10million-worth of free cavity-wall insulation to its customers aged over 60 – helping to reduce their energy bills, cut their carbon footprint and save them money.

The home insulation, provided and installed for free by British Gas, could save each customer £110 a year on their energy bills and reduce their CO2 emissions by 25 tonnes over the product's lifetime. Around a third of all the heat lost in an un-insulated home is through the walls.

The offer is open to all British Gas customers over the age of 60. To qualify, customers would need to own a property with walls suitable for cavity-wall insulation. Homes with cavity walls were typically built from the 1930s to the late 1980s. Around 7 million homes in the UK could benefit from cavity-wall insulation.

The deal builds on other current free offers on insulation. British Gas offers free loft insulation and cavity-wall insulation to all those over 70 or on income or disability related benefits. Such free offers could save customers hundreds of pounds on the upfront costs. Unsubsidised cavity-wall insulation on a typical three-bedroom semi-detached house costs £500 to install.

Jon Kimber, Managing Director of British Gas New Energy, said:

“With winter approaching and the financial outlook remaining uncertain we know that people are looking at ways to save money. £1 in every £4 spent on heating is wasted due to poor insulation so energy efficiency can have a massive impact. By offering and installing home insulation for free we are doing what we can to help our customers prepare for winter and help save cash.

British Gas is leading the way in making Britain's homes warmer and more energy efficient. We are the first energy supplier to offer free cavity-wall insulation to the over 60s nationwide and we have the fastest growing insulation business in the country.”

Customers interested in taking up the offer should call the British Gas insulation team on 0800 068 00325 and they will arrange for a free survey at a convenient time for the customer.

The offer of free cavity-wall insulation will be available for a limited time only. Customers will need to have registered interest by 31st October 2010.

Please advise if British Gas are still offering free loft insulation to their customers over 60 years of age. Many thanks.
