The British Gas 'Pools 4 Schools' initiative provides temporary swimming facilities in areas of 'aquatic deprivation' across the UK. Nationally, one-in-five children are unable to swim 25 metres by the time they leave Primary School. This figure is as high as four out of five in some communities with limited pool access.
Pools 4 Schools installs a temporary, mobile pool into a school hall or gym and opens it out to schools and community groups. In this safe environment experienced teachers provide a range of activities, from mini-polo to aqua-aerobics, and help children learn a vital life skill, improve their fitness and overcome their fear of water.
In celebration of this initiative and to continue the swimming effort over the winter months, we're using leftover flip flops from the Great Swim Series 2011 in a competition where you could win VIP tickets to the British Gas Swimming Championships!
All you have to do is visit our Facebook page and enter our 'Flip Flop Flip' by generating a random number between 1 and 1000. Each number corresponds to an actual flip flop which will be thrown into a pool on Sunday 11th December. Members of the British Swim Team will dive into the pool and pick out numbered flip flops at random. If your number corresponds to the flip flop chosen you nab yourself a great prize!
Up for grabs we have two pairs of VIP tickets to the British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre in March 2012, five one month free memberships to Nuffield Heath Fitness & Wellbeing Centres and ten sets of British Swimming Team signed merchandise. You have to be quick though as there are only 1000 flip flops available… Once they're gone, they're gone!
We're also donating 3000 pairs of flip flops to Nova's chosen charity, The Red Cross. They will send the flip flops to a country in Africa who are struggling to afford footwear, to ensure that the flip flops go to a much needed home.
