We’re hiring more apprentices!

Posted by British Gas in Community

British Gas has a long and proud history of training apprentices so we’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be expanding our programme to welcome a further 200 young people onto our apprenticeship scheme.

The apprentices will graduate to jobs installing, servicing and repairing energy efficient boilers and central heating systems in homes across the UK, and will benefit from two years of training rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. They will also be encouraged to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, which all British Gas apprentices look to achieve as part of their training.

A British Gas apprenticeship involves a mix of training at the British Gas Academy and time spent working in customers’ homes shadowing a ‘buddy’, who will be a fully trained British Gas engineer. In the last ten years, we’ve recruited and trained over 3,300 apprentices, and last year alone British Gas invested £10million into training academies and apprentices.

Of the 200 apprentices we’re looking to recruit, 36 apprenticeships have been snapped up in Scotland, Birmingham, Leicester and Guildford. They will begin their Central Heating Installation apprenticeship this month at British Gas academies. But don’t worry, because if you’re interested in joining British Gas as an apprentice in the service and repair division, applications will open in the next month.

Gary Smith, GMB National Secretary for Energy and Utilities, said: "The British Gas apprenticeship is the best available. It is a real apprenticeship scheme that equips young people for life. It is great news that amongst all the economic gloom and with unemployment amongst the young soaring that so many opportunities are being created.”

Chris Jansen, Managing Director of Services at British Gas, said:  “We’re proud of our apprentices and the role they play in helping our customers’ homes stay warm and in good working order. Applicants often think that they need the technical skills in place already before they apply. Interpersonal skills are actually more important to us. We can teach the technical knowledge, we’re looking for people who are natural communicators and want to give great service to our customers.”
