Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC)

What is the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme?

The CRC is a new, mandatory climate change and energy-saving scheme for the UK aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions from large businesses. The scheme is administered by the Environment Agency (EA) and has been in place since April 2010. Qualifying businesses will pay a value to the EA which is based on the number of tonnes of carbon they have emitted in the preceding financial year.

Which businesses are affected?

An organisation qualifies for Phase 1 if it has consumed more than 6GWh of electricity through half hourly metering in calendar year 2008. Phase 2 qualification starts in April 2012.

You should have registered for the scheme by now.

CRC & the Government Spending Review

As a result of the Government's October Spending Review, where it was announced that the CRC will be simplified, there are a few revisions to the way CRC will operate. The major changes are:

  • Revenue raised from the scheme will now be used to support public finances rather than being recycled to participants who demonstrate efficiency improvements.

  • The first purchase of allowances will now take place at the year-end.

  • The Performance League Table will be retained only as a reputation driver within the scheme.

Further discussion papers have been set out with the aim of further simplifying the CRC. These discussion papers are not consultation documents, however, it is anticipated that the responses from the discussions will be taken into account when further consultation documents are written. Energy360° will be keeping a close eye on the discussions and will provide you with further updates as they become available.
