For many businesses, winter means higher energy bills - and business energy usage can increase significantly during the winter months of December, January and February.

We examined seasonal energy usage in a range of businesses to show how the amount of energy used can increase during the winter months:

Retail business - typical seasonal energy consumption

This graph shows the average monthly consumption of a hardware goods retailer with average annual dual fuel usage of 210MWh.

  • 40% increase in gas usage from autumn to winter
  • 30% of annual gas consumption and 25% of annual electricity consumption occurs in winter

Manufacturing business - typical seasonal energy consumption

This graph shows the average monthly consumption from an industrial component manufacturer with average annual dual fuel usage of 165MWh.

  • 70% increase in gas usage and 38% increase in electricity usage from autumn to winter
  • 51% of annual gas consumption and 39% of annual electricity consumption occurs in winter

Office-based business - typical seasonal energy consumption

  • 63% increase in gas usage from autumn to winter
  • 50% of annual gas consumption and 24% of annual electricity consumption occurs in winter
