1How do I find my account number?

Your account number is unique to you and appears on all correspondence from British Gas. It is usually printed on the top right of your bill. You can use it to identify yourself when making payments or contacting us.

The MPAN number is the unique number relating specifically to the meter at your property.

2What is my contract number?

Your contract number is a unique reference number for each contract.

3How do I find my site number?

Each of your sites has an individual number located on the top right of your bill.

4What is the standing charge for?

The standing charge is for covering the cost of meter readings and maintaining the metering network.

5What is the Climate Change Levy?

CCL is an environmental tax introduced by the Government in April 2001 to help the UK achieve its carbon emission reduction targets and forms part of your monthly bill. Some businesses are exempt. Please click here for more information

6What is the Meter ID?

A Meter ID is the unique number relating specifically to the meter at your property.

7What is the unit price?

The Unit Price is the pence per kilowatt hour or pence per kilowatt day that we bill you for.

8Where have you got my meter reading from?

We accept meter readings from one of four possible sources. The capital letter printed next to your meter reading tells you which of the following sources was used:-

  • S - Supplier: your previous supplier has provided us with a meter read.
  • M - Meter Read Agent: a meter read agent has visited the property and recorded a firm reading.
  • C - Customer: the Customer has contacted us with a meter reading they have taken.
  • E - Estimate: we have generated an estimated bill based on previous firm readings.

9How much is VAT?

This box outlines the % Rate you pay and the value in pounds that equates to.

10How much is my bill for this period?

This shows the total charges for your current billing period.

11What is the balance on my account?

Your current balance takes into account, previous balance, credits, debits and your current bill. This section will only appear on your bill if you are single site customer.

12When does my next payment need to be received by?

The date shown against the Payment Due Date tells you when we need to receive your next payment.

13How do I pay my bill?

You can pay by Cash, Cheque, or Direct Debit. The example given here shows you what a bill looks like if you pay by Cash/Cheque. If you pay by Direct Debit, this section will not appear on your bill.

2 Type of bill, e.g. based on estimated or actual meter reading/s

3 Previous account activity

4 Current account activity (details on reverse)

5 Clearly shows the total amount now due (made up of a plus b). Will indicate a minus figure if the account is in credit

6 What happens next, e.g. your payment deadline

7 Details of who to contact if you have any questions or queries

8 You should quote this number whenever you contact us

9 Here you'll find details of new offers or other useful information

10 What happens next, e.g. your Direct Debit date

11 Shows if the statement/bill is a duplicate or replaces a previous one

13 What is the Renewable Source Electricity charge?
This is a charge we have applied to your account instead of the Climate Change Levy.

4 Shows unit types, e.g. standard ('Unit Charge'), day, night, weekend as relevant to your contract

5 Previous and current readings, their dates and types

6 Units used this billing period

7 Some meters have a multiplier that converts the meter reading to actual usage. The number here is your meter multiplier

8 The total electricity units you have used (shown as kWh)

9 The Climate Change Levy (CCL) is an environmental energy tax chargeable on most commercial and industrial supplies of gas and electricity

11 Your Standing Charge rate (per day)

12 Your electricity charges for this billing period

13 Your Standing Charge for this billing period
