Periodic Inspection & Testing

The 'Electricity at Work Regulations 1989' in Regulations 4(1) and 4(2) lay down the requirement to ensure that an electrical installation should be designed, installed, constructed and maintained in a safe manner at all times. The basis for periodic inspection and testing is derived from Guidance Note 3 of the 'IEE Wiring Regulations BS7671:2008'.

Our inspection and testing of an electrical installation generates a Periodic Inspection Report which is a condition report supplemented by the testing results. It is conducted by a team of two competent qualified inspectors; the inspection highlights any significant defects on an electrical system. These may include; exposed conductors or terminations, broken covers, conduits or trunking: the lack of earthing on conductive parts, inadequate support or damage to cables.

The testing of an electrical installation follows BS7671:2008 and comprises of:

  • C.P.C continuity
  • Ring circuit continuity
  • Insulation Resistance
  • Polarity
  • Earth fault loop impedance
  • Prospective fault current
  • Operation of residual current devices
  • Functional testing

Testing is carried out as far as is reasonably practicable as defined in EaWR 1989.

Electrical Inspection & Testing Programmes

British Gas Business is committed to helping organisations achieve compliance with the 'Electricity at Work Regulations 1989' and therefore offers a standard service of 100% inspection, 100% testing (as far as is reasonably practicable) and network drawings.

Dependant on the size and nature of an installation, we can customise programmes over 1 to 5 years to suit your requirements or budget and the industry recommendations.

If your company is in possession of previous records of testing and network drawings then we may be able to offer a reduced service of representative testing.

Portable Appliance Testing

'The Electricity at Work Regulations Act' places a responsibility on employers, employees and self-employed persons to take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure the safe use of electrical equipment at work.

An important part of this responsibility is the proper maintenance of portable electrical appliances, particularly as the Health and Safety Executive estimates that a quarter of electrical accidents involve portable appliances.

Portable appliance testing (PAT), is therefore, an essential part of any good health and safety policy. We offer a regular programme of maintenance, inspection and testing of appliances to help ensure you can continue to operate in a safe manner while fully complying with all relevant regulation.

We have a team dedicated portable appliance testing engineers (C&G 2377 & 2381 qualified), they work closely with you to provide a smooth and efficient service, from managing the testing programme to carrying out the works, through to producing the test reports.

Our range of services includes:

  • Access to all records and test results via our Online Real Time Reporting solution
  • FREE consultation, quotation and frequency assessment
  • Comprehensive programming and management of testing
  • Full test results and reports
  • Co-ordinated labelling systems.
