Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panels

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels require only daylight (not sunlight) to generate, electricity for nearly all buildings, large or small, such as offices, schools, colleges, social housing, industrial locations and plants.

How Solar PV Panels Work

Solar PV panels consist of cells of one or two layers made from semi-conducting material. when light shines on the cell, it creates an electric field across the layers, causing electricity to flow. The greater the intensity of the light, the greater the flow of electricity.

Requirements

Selecting a good location to install solar PV panels is key. Ideally a solar PV system requires a roof or wall that faces within 90 degrees south, is strong enough to take substantial weight and has no large obstructions overshadowing it.

Planning permission

Planning permission may be required when installing solar PV panels, e.g. if the buildiing is listed , in a conservation area or a World Heritage Site.
