Solar Thermal Panels

Solar thermal energy solutions can reduce the cost of providing hot water in commercial applications.

How Solar Thermal Panels Work

Solar thermal panels use energy form the sun to heat water. Solar panels are normally fitted to the roof of your building to absorb the sun's energy. A heat transfer system then uses this energy to heat water. The hot water is stored in a hot water cylinder ready for whenever you need it.

Solar thermal systems work alongside conventional water heaters, like a boiler or immersion heater. These can be used to heat the water further when the solar thermal system does not reach the temperature needed.

Requirements

To work effectively, a solar water heating system needs a south east to south west facing roof receiving sunlight for most of the day. The surface on which the panels are mounted should receive as much light as possible and have no large obstructions overshadowing it.

Planning permission

Planning permission may be required when installing solar thermal panels, e.g. if the building is listed, in a conservation area or a World Heritage Site.
