How smart metering works

Smart technology

Smart meters can help businesses like yours save time, money and effort, allowing you to spend more time focussing on your business.

Smart meters can be installed in the place of your current electricity meter. Once installed they securely transmit your meter readings directly to us, via a SIM card in your meter, just like a mobile phone.

Once your smart meter is installed, we'll regularly collect your data via a secure encrypted service. You'll receive accurate bills, based on your actual electricity usage, allowing you to more easily plan your budget. It's part of our commitment to removing estimated bills for our customers.

Already have a smart meter?

If you have a smart meter, but need more information on how it can help you control your energy costs, please view our Frequently Asked Questions page.

What happens once my smart meter is installed?

Once your smart meter is installed we'll start the process of setting up the connection to our systems, so we can read your meter remotely. It can take up to eight weeks to do this as we rely on a number of third parties and you might receive an estimated bill during this time. If your next bill is due during this time, you can provide us with a meter reading online to ensure you only pay for the energy you use.

Already a customer?

If you would like a smart meter, just sign up and when our engineers are in your area, we'll contact you and you choose a two hour window that best suits you.

If you're a large business, for example, with more than 15 sites or sites associated with your framework agreements covering more than 15 sites, unfortunately you're not eligible for this offer. Please contact your Account Manager to discuss your smart meter requirements in more detail.

Not a customer yet?

If you're thinking of switching energy suppliers, you can get a quote today. Once you've switched to us, you can sign up for a smart meter and when our rollout is in your area, we'll contact you.

* For reasons outside of our control for example due to poor signal strength, we may still have to estimate some of your bills or take a further meter reading.
