Internal Green Initiatives

Creating a more energy efficient business is not only something we can help you with, it's a key goal of our own business. We take the advice we give to British businesses and use it in our offices around the country.

Our Green Team meets once a month at our Spinneyside offices in Leicester to discuss ideas and ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint. We also have Green Champions around our offices helping employees to contribute to our initiatives.

What did we achieve in 2007?

Air conditioning adjustments

We saved 46 tonnes of CO2 (the weight of 18 minibuses) by improving the efficiency and running of the air conditioning system.

PC Base turn off

We have been encouraging employees to save energy by turning off PC units. We have currently saved the equivalent of 135 tonnes of CO2 (the weight of 54 minibuses). It's enough energy to power our Spinneyside offices for two months.

Raising green awareness

We use many different ways to tell employees about events and campaigns and raise green awareness. Framed posters in toilets have been one of our most effective communication tools. We also send out a regular newsletter called "Going Green" and have big boards in reception areas to advertise green initiatives. In 2007 we put up a huge green thermometer to keep everyone focused on recycling targets.

World Environment Day (WED)

The World Environment Day was a great success. Our Green Champions put together a day full of activities, competitions and general awareness about the importance of recycling. This included a recycling relay - a fun and engaging way for everyone to learn and raise awareness about recycling.

Waste recycling

We hit our year-end figure of 60% waste recycled. 10% above the target set by the Centrica Group. In January 2007 our head office in Spinneyside threw away 15 tons of waste and only 5.5 tonnes was recycled. By the end of 2007 we threw away 7 tons of waste of which 5.5 tonnes was recycled. Mixed paper and mixed plastic bins were put around the office and proved to be a great success in helping us achieve our exceptional recycling target.
