Home Insulations FAQ's

Your home insulation survey

1. How can I book an appointment for a free survey of my home?

You can book an appointment for a free survey of your home either online or over the phone. When you book online, we ask you to give us 2 preferred days and times and then our Home Insulation team will call you to advise the exact date.

Whichever way you choose to book your survey appointment, we will always send you a confirmation letter in the post.

2. What appointment times are available?

The survey times available are Monday to Friday from 8am-12 noon and 12 noon to 5pm.

3. How long will I have to wait for an appointment?

Our surveyor will normally visit your home within 10 days of us receiving your request for an appointment, although please bear in mind this may vary depending on where you live.

4. What will happen during the appointment to survey my home?

One of our qualified surveyors will visit your home and assess what type of insulation you need. We will then provide you with a free, no obligation quote. If you decide to have your home insulated, we will then arrange a convenient time for the installer to carry out the work.

5. How long will the survey take?

The survey will normally take between 1-2 hours to complete.

6. Will I need to be at home while the survey is carried out?

Yes. Someone will need to be in the property at the time of the survey.

7. What if my property is larger than an average property?

The size of your home will be assessed during the survey and if it is larger than a 4 bedroom detached , it may cost slightly more to install home insulation. The surveyor will provide all the information you need and will give you a free, no obligation quote to ensure you know exactly what you will be paying.

8. Who do I contact if I have any questions about my survey?

If you have any questions or concerns about your survey appointment once it has been booked you can contact the surveyor who will be happy to help you. You'll find their contact number on the survey confirmation letter we send you.

Cavity Wall Insulation

1. How will I know if my property is suitable for cavity wall insulation?

(i) If your property was built between 1932 and 1982 then you are likely to have cavity walls.
(ii) If the thickness of your wall is greater than 11inches then the likelihood of the property having a cavity is high.
(iii) If the configuration of the bricks in your house looks like the 'typical cavity wall' diagram then your house is more than likely to have cavity walls.

2. How is cavity wall insulation installed?

The insulation is blown in through the holes made in the wall, which are no bigger than 18mm to 25mm. The holes are then filled in afterwards and matched to the existing appearance of your wall. It's all done from the outside, so it will not affect the appearance of the inside of your home.

3. Will the work be guaranteed?

Yes. Our cavity wall insulation has a 25 year guarantee.

Loft Insulation

1. I already have some loft insulation - I don't think I need anymore?

If you already have some loft insulation then you may need to have it topped up. If you have less than 3 inches of insulation it's worthwhile having a survey carried out to make sure you have the right amount.

2. How will I know if I can have loft insulation installed?

(i) If you live in a house or a flat which has loft space then you should be able to install loft insulation. Your loft hatch must be 400cm x 400cm in size.
(ii) If your loft is boarded we will not be able to insulate your loft, as we won't be able to remove the boards.

3. Will I need to remove anything from my loft before the insulation can be installed?

Not necessarily. Our experienced installers can normally work around a few items stored in the loft. When our surveyor carries out the survey they will be able to give you more information.

Home Insulation Savings

1. What savings will I make once my home has been insulated?

As soon as your insulation is installed, your home will become more energy efficient.

  • Cavity Wall insulation - £1151
  • Loft insulation - £1501
  • Topping up of existing loft insulation - £451

Notes

1, Source: Energy Saving Trust, July 2009. Based on gas-heated, 3 bed semi-detached property with no existing cavity wall/loft insulation. Consumption based on industry average consumption assessed by BERR (17,616 kWh gas, 3,935 kWh electricity). Loft top up saving based on topping up an existing 50mm of loft insulation to 270mm. Actual savings depend on type, age of home and individual circumstances. Not all homes are suitable for additional insulation. When updating existing insulation, savings will be reduced.
