All about probate
What if the property is owned?
If the property is owned there are a number of different ways we can help you manage the account. The full details will be explained when you contact us, the below gives a brief overview of what you can expect and we’ll be here to help you every step of the way.
Is there someone else still living in the property?
For private properties; where someone is still living in the property, we can usually change the name on the account and you’d retain the same account numbers. In order to do this we’ll ask the person living at the property for their consent to put the account into their name, if we can’t talk to them we can send a consent form out to be signed.
Is the property going to be sold?
For private properties due to be sold, we’ll need a meter reading from as close to the time the customer passed away as possible. If this information is not available then an up-to-date reading can be used, alternatively we’ll estimate the meter reading using previous meter readings we have available. From this we’ll send an up-to-date bill to the solicitors or executors. This bill is for reference purposes only, to register our interest in the estate and to provide the information needed when applying for grant of probate. We’ll then put a temporary hold on the accounts which is designed to prevent unnecessary contact by British Gas at a difficult time. Please be aware that we’ll stay in regular contact for updates on the progress of the estate as a matter of courtesy. You’ll need to contact us as soon as the Grant of Probate is received so we can change the account ownership into the beneficiaries / executors details or close the account in the event the property is sold, please note we’ll also need an up-to-date meter reading from around this time.
Will someone inherit the property?
When someone inherits the property we’ll need to set up a new account for the ongoing energy used. This will be from the date it’s inherited or occupied by someone else, at this stage we’ll also close down the account of the person that’s passed away.
**Please note if there is a Pay As You Go Energy meter in the property we’ll need to open a new account in all circumstances**
