As part of our commitment to being environmentally responsible we’ve been investing in new technologies that have the potential to change the way we fuel our homes. One such technology is micro-CHP (combined heat and power) and we’ve partnered with Baxi to distribute their Ecogen Boiler to our customers starting later this year.

The Ecogen Boiler is the first commercially viable wall mounted micro-CHP unit in the UK. It offers huge savings on fuel bills and can cut domestic carbon emissions by 20%. It is no bigger than a standard domestic boiler and is virtually noise and vibration free.

What is micro-CHP?

Micro-CHP works by simultaneously generating heat and electricity. So a micro-CHP unit replaces a conventional gas boiler to provide heat and hot water but also generates electricity. Most of this electricity will be used in your own home but any excess can be exported to the grid.

Around 1.5 million boilers are replaced in the UK each year and it’s estimated that by 2015 micro-CHP units will represent 30% of this market. With each Ecogen unit capable of generating around 1kw of electricity this new technology could eventually provide 20% of the UK’s electricity, more than is currently obtained from nuclear power.
