There’s an old saying that suggests that if you’re tired of London, then you’re tired of life. That may have been the case two hundred years ago in Samuel Johnson’s day, but fast forward to the 21st century and swapping London life for the rural idyll is every bit as ambitious and exciting as staying in the Big Smoke.
Despite living on the same London road for many years, Jane only knew a handful of her neighbours. She decided to take a new, community-based approach to living, and set up The Threshold Centre in north Dorset. It proved the perfect opportunity to create an alternative lifestyle.
Jane’s ‘co-housing’ arrangement is the best of both worlds. Those involved get a property of their own, plus a shared house for communal socialising. Throughout the week each community member contributes four hours to the upkeep of the shared house, cooking meals for each other using produce from their allotment.
The Threshold Centre is a housing initiative that puts community at the centre of day-to-day living.
