Smart meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters that help make your life easier. They record your energy use and automatically send meter readings to us, meaning an end to estimated bills.
Smart meters work with a smart energy monitor, that you can place anywhere in your home. It shows how much energy you're using in pounds and pence in near real time. You can view both your gas and electricity use to see how much it’s costing to boil the kettle or leave the heating on at night. When you can see how much you're using, you can start to make small changes to use less energy and save money on your bills.
If you are a Smart Pay As You Go customer, you can top up anywhere using our app, online, over the phone or still at a local shop and you can check your balance on your smart energy monitor.

What does a smart meter do?
Smart meters take accurate, real-time meter readings of your gas and electricity so there is no more need to submit meter readings or have someone come to your property to take them. They send this information automatically to your smart energy monitor and to us. Don’t worry, our smart meters use a secure communications network to send your meter reads back to us, which follow national and international security standards, so your data is safe and secure.
You choose how often your smart meters take meter readings – it can be half hourly, daily or monthly. Whichever option you choose, the readings will never be sent to us more than once a day. The more meter readings we get, the more detailed breakdown of your usage we can give you.
Once we have your readings, we can send you accurate bills and with the help of your smart meters you can see the little changes that go a long way to help save on energy and reduce your bills.
How do I get smart meters?
All British Gas customers will be offered smart meters between now and 2020. If you have either your gas or your gas and electricity with us, log in to your online account to find out if you home is ready for smart meters and book your free installation. We are working hard to ensure all our customers can benefit from smart meters now, but smart meter technology is not ready for every home just yet. If your home isn’t ready we’ll add you to our waiting list and let you know when you can get them installed.
