The first gas safe register

The UK’s first official list of gas installers – the Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers – came about in 1970.

The register was established as a result of a gas explosion in London that happened two years earlier. Sadly, the accident claimed multiple lives.

The building tower had just opened its doors two months before the accident occurred. The cause was a faulty joint that resulted in a gas leak, and the explosion happened when a resident struck a match to boil water on the gas stove.

In the wake of the accident, the Government updated building regulations and the gas register was established.

The register was later renamed the Council for Registered Gas Installers – or CORGI as it came to be known. In 1991, law even required that gas businesses and engineers register with CORGI.

Then the Gas Safe Register became the new official regulator in 2009. Today, there are 140,000 engineers and more than 76,000 businesses registered with Gas Safe.

The job of the Gas Safe Register is to keep the list of qualified engineers fully up to date. They also investigate complaints and inspect around 40,000 engineers each year to ensure they are properly qualified. Plus, they run public awareness campaigns, such as the annual Gas Safety Week.

The future of heating

As you can see, the industry has come a long way in the past 50 years to making sure that businesses can operate safely and know which engineers they can trust.

But how about the future?

Heating is notoriously challenging to decarbonise. This means that gas safety and boiler efficiency will have to play an important role in reaching the country’s net-zero emissions target.

For instance, the number of gas boilers never falls below 6.5 million installations under the National Grid’s future predictions. In other words, gas boilers will likely make up a minimum of 20% of all UK boilers even 30 years from now.
