Help with gas appliances
What if I can smell gas?
Call the Gas Emergency Services immediately on 0800 111 999 if you, think there might be a leak, or are worried there are fumes escaping from an appliance.
What you can do in the meantime:
- Open all the doors and windows to let air in
- Turn the gas off at the meter, unless the meter is located in the cellar or basement
- Don't touch any electrical switches
- Don't smoke, light matches or have any naked flames in the house
- If you have an electronic gate, open it manually. The same goes for anything electrical, don't use it
Are my burners assembled correctly?
They're designed to only fit together one way to avoid confusion. There's usually a hole or groove in the burner body for the spark electrode. But some burners can be more complicated, so check with the manufacturer how they should be put together.
Can you help me switch my pilot light on?
Unfortunately, there's no one way of lighting a pilot light and each appliance works differently. You might find directions on the appliance itself. Otherwise, you'll need to look at your manufacturer's guide.
What if my appliance is showing a fault code or flashing lights?
If there's a fault code, something's gone wrong. If it's flashing lights, it's just trying to tell you something.
Either way, note down everything you can about what you can see: like the sequence the lights flash in or the error message showing up. Then try resetting it by following the manufacturer's guide.
Can you help me get my gas fire working?
Yes, try the steps below. If you don't feel comfortable trying to fix it and you have cover then book one of our engineers. If you're not a British Gas customer then contact our live chat agents.
What you can try
- Check the main gas supply - it might have been turned off accidentally.
- Check you're lighting the fire the correct way. Look at your manual if you're not sure. Or even the instructions on the gas fire itself, they're usually in the control panel.
- Have you cleaned or replaced the coals or logs recently? Sometimes, for safety reasons, the fire only works if they're placed in a particular order. If you're not sure how to check, look at your user manual as it depends on the model.
- Contact our live chat agents if it's still not working.
Can you help me get my wall heater working?
Yes, try the steps below. Always check the user manual when you're trying things out. You also might find some instructions on your heater's control panel.
If you don't feel comfortable trying to fix it yourself, book one of our engineers to take a look. If you're not a British Gas customer then contact our One-off repair live chat agents.
Fixing your wall heater

- Check your pilot light hasn't gone out. This sometimes happens if the heater's old. If you need to relight it, follow the instructions on your heater
- See if the heater's been lit properly. If you're not sure, check the manual
- Check the control tap is turned on if your heater's lit
- Turn the control tap to the highest setting for a few minutes. But only if the pilot light is lit
