British Gas Business - statement

We want to improve the service we deliver our customers and become more competitive. We are investing in new systems and processes so we can provide better customer service. As we make these improvements, including a new billing system - we expect fewer customers to need to call us and we'll be doing less back-office work.

We have therefore reviewed resource levels in British Gas Business and as a result propose a reduction in the number of roles by 158 at our sites between now and the end of 2015.

We are determined to minimise compulsory redundancies.

We will be consulting with our employees and their representatives. Wherever possible, we’ll be working hard to find redeployment opportunities. British Gas Services has plans to recruit around 160 roles at its Leicester facility during 2014. We hope that as many people as possible will be able to continue working for British Gas in this expanded centre.

We will look at agency and fixed-term contractor roles currently within the business and we will hold or delay recruitment where appropriate to minimise the impact on our permanent employees. We will reduce our off-shore resource to minimise the impact on our people.

As far as possible we will offer those employees affected opportunities in other parts of our business. For colleagues who will be leaving our business, we will provide an extensive programme of outplacement support to give them as much help as we can to secure roles elsewhere.

We have considered all our options with great care and believe the proposed changes offer the right solution for our business. We will now move to a formal 45 day consultation period with our employees and their representatives.

We will work to ensure continued high levels of service for our customers during this period.

Our priority now is to support all those potentially affected by today’s announcement to ensure a fair and transparent process throughout. We recognise that today’s news will be very disappointing for our employees and their families.

It has been a very difficult decision to begin consultation about these proposed reductions, but we believe that this in the best long term interests of our customers and our business.
