Scottish Apprenticeships Week - Case Study - Craig Sinclair

Craig began his two-year apprenticeship in July 2013 and is amongst 60 plus apprentices currently enrolled on training programmes at the Academy.

Craig explained: “I left high school with eight Standard Grades, two Intermediates and one Higher aged 17 and initially began working, first in call centres and then a bookmakers, but I was keen to find a job which would satisfy my interest in engineering.”

Craig applied to Scottish Gas. After completing the selection process, he secured a place on the central heating installation apprenticeship programme. He continued: “A lot of my friends had already been through apprenticeships and were doing really well for themselves. I enjoy learning how things work and wanted to do something that involved practical, hands-on work, so Scottish Gas really appealed to me.

“I enjoy working with my fellow apprentices in the academy as you learn so much from other people and I’m able to gain skills from them which are really helping me to become a better engineer. Learning the theory-side of the course is really enjoyable, and I like the way the programme is structured to give you the chance to regularly apply what you’ve learned in college out in the field.”

Craig particularly likes working in his district to help customers resolve their heating problems. He added: “The practical side of the course is great and no two days are the same. When you roll back the carpets you never know what challenge you’ll be faced with. Meeting different customers is also really interesting as they all have different backgrounds and stories to tell.”

On his progress so far, Craig concluded: “I know a lot of people my age who have struggled to find the right career but my first year with Scottish Gas has been a great experience. From day one I’ve learned so much and have been given all the tools I need; from an Ipad and phone to tools and a van. I’d recommend an apprenticeship to anyone.”

Almost 50 apprentices are currently in training across Scottish Gas - we’re proud to invest millions of pounds each year in developing skills for our people and the future economic success of the economy.

As part of Scottish Apprenticeships Week, Scottish Gas is showcasing apprenticeship opportunities to the public at its award-winning Academy in Hamilton. The Academy in Hamilton is one of six award-winning facilities which the business uses to train apprentices and up-skill existing engineers on new technologies and appliances. In 2013, the company invested £13m in its six UK training academies and apprentices.
