Cardiff and Wrexham are leading the way on smart meter roll-out in Wales

Cardiff and Wrexham are leading the way in the roll-out of smart meters in Wales, it was revealed today by British Gas at an event at the Senedd.

As the number of smart meters installed by British Gas in homes across Britain passes the million mark, the company confirmed that Cardiff has more than 3,500 smart meters installed in customers’ homes, followed by Wrexham with 2,600.

Cardiff and Wrexham are followed by Rhondda Cynon Taf, Conwy, Caerphilly, Denbighshire, Gwynedd, Powys, Newport and Ynys Mon to make the top ten areas of Wales where homes are benefiting from smart meters.

British Gas is leading the way in the smart meter roll-out across Britain, getting smart meters into homes more quickly than any other energy supplier. The roll-out is part of a Government initiative to replace current gas and electricity meters with smart meters as standard by 2020. Already, British Gas has installed 30,000 residential smart meters and a further 20,000 in businesses across Wales.

Smart meters give customers greater insight into how much gas and electricity they’re using, meaning they have more control over their energy use and can therefore manage their bills more effectively. A ‘smart energy monitor’ that can be placed anywhere in the home displays in pounds and pence how much gas and electricity is being used and its cost in pounds and pence, helping people be more energy efficient. Smart meter readings are sent directly to energy companies, putting an end to estimated bills and manual meter readings.

Smart meters installed by British Gas also come with a Smart Energy Report that breaks down a home’s energy use by day, week or month; shows how much is used on things like appliances, heating and lighting; compares the household’s use to other similar homes; and provides personalised tips on how to be more energy efficient.

Today’s event was hosted by Mark Isherwood, AM for North Wales. He said: “I was pleased to host the British Gas smart meter event which provided a great insight into how new technology is helping customers across Wales become more aware of energy use and how they can manage their bills.”

At the event, AMs had the chance to see for themselves how consumers are benefiting from the roll-out of smart meters and how they are taking simple steps every day to manage their energy use.

Thomas Jones, a Smart Energy Expert for British Gas installs smart meters in South Wales. He said: “Whether it’s discovering how energy efficient the fridge is, or the cost of using the tumble dryer, I know that customers are very excited about this new technology. They tell me they are keen to see how much they are spending every day.”

British Gas has installed one million residential smart meters across Britain, and a further 400,000 in businesses.
