Half a million British Gas smart meter customers now receiving personalised breakdown of their energy use

  • The smart energy tool gives a detailed breakdown of energy consumption and tips for saving
  • 77% say it has helped them better understand their energy use
  • Smart meter leader British Gas hails “significant milestone for customer information and engagement”

British Gas has announced that more than half a million of its smart meter customers are now receiving a new personalised breakdown of their energy use through the smart energy tool. [1] Available online, it itemises energy use by day, week, month and year, and by appliances, heating and lighting. The service also offers personalised tips on how customers can save money. [2]

Managing Director of British Gas Smart Metering, Jorge Pikunic, said: “This is a significant milestone and shows how British Gas is leading the smart meter roll-out. With smart meters and our smart energy tool, people are more informed and more engaged with their energy use and bills. At British Gas we’ll continue to innovate to give customers new ways of understanding and managing their energy use.

How does it work?

  • The tool uses meter readings submitted automatically by smart meters, and shows in graphs how much energy has been used each day, in kilowatt hours or pounds and pence.
  • Customers provide information about their home, like its size, age and number of occupants. That data is used to estimate likely energy use split between heating, lighting and household appliances. The service offers the customer personalised tips on how to save energy, and compares consumption with similar homes.

Recent research with smart meter customers using British Gas showed they value receiving such detailed information. 77% said it helped them better understand their energy consumption. 64% said it helped them better understand how to cut their energy costs, and of those, 80% had acted to alter their consumption. [3]

British Gas smart meter customer Josee Parmley from Dorset said: “Before being able to see our energy use through the online interactive tool, we’d just use appliances as we liked or leave the heating on for hours on end. Now that we can access information about our energy use on a daily and weekly basis, complete with charts and graphs, I love being able to see the results of the changes we’ve made. ”

Helen Mackinnon, a customer from Glasgow, said: “My smart energy tool and smart meters have given me the information I need to understand when and how I use energy. I can easily go online, look at the breakdown of my use and see how switching lights off or turning my radiators down is accurately reflected in my bill. I’m now able to understand my energy use in real terms.”

British Gas is leading the way in installing smart meters in homes, and has installed 1.2 million already. As well as offering the smart energy tool, British Gas is experimenting with displaying information about customers’ energy use on a smartphone.

[1] Data requires daily or half-hourly meter readings, automatically submitted through smart meters.
[2] A version can also be posted, if requested.
[3] Research conducted with 1,151 customers using the tool in November 2014.

About Smart Meters

  • Smart meters replace existing standard gas and electricity meters and will be introduced in homes and businesses as standard by 2020.
  • They come with a smart energy monitor that displays how much gas and electricity is being used, and its cost in pounds and pence, in near-real time. That information is shared with energy suppliers automatically, putting an end to estimated bills and meter readings.
  • The information from smart meters gives customers greater understanding of how they’re using their energy.
