Southwark homes receive £16 million investment for energy efficiency makeover

Southwark Council residents will benefit from warmer, more energy efficient homes this winter as 6,481 homes in the borough are provided with internal and external wall insulation

Around 10,000 Southwark residents are set to benefit from warmer homes this winter thanks to a £16 million energy efficiency partnership between Southwark Council and British Gas, the country’s biggest energy provider.

British Gas and Southwark Council are installing internal and external wall insulation on council homes, improving the living conditions. As well as making homes warmer and more energy efficient, the work is also dramatically improving the look of the buildings.

Since the scheme began in June 2013 almost 6,500 homes in the Bermondsey, Rotherhithe & Peckham areas of the borough have been insulated, making them more energy efficient and easier to heat.

The work was funded by the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) scheme which focuses on providing energy efficiency measures to low income and vulnerable customers and those living in hard to heat homes. The project has allowed the co-operation with many community groups, local contractors, and generated several new job opportunities.

Steve Gapik from British Gas, said: “We are very pleased to be working with Southwark Council and making a real difference to the borough. We know household budgets are stretched and this work is helping local people to live in comfortable, warm homes whilst keeping energy costs down. “Southwark residents can expect to see a continued improvement to their community in the coming months.”

Councillor Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for housing, said: “We welcome the funding and works delivered by British Gas in partnership with the council’s major works team. Southwark has invested over £100 million in the housing stock via our Warm, Dry and Safe programme throughout the duration of the British Gas energy efficiency works package. We have, and will continue to, work in partnership with British Gas to deliver enhanced refurbishment works to our stock wherever possible.”

The project is part of British Gas’ energy efficiency partnership with Southwark Council and is funded by the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) scheme which focuses on providing energy efficiency measures to low income and vulnerable customers and those living in hard to heat homes.

British Gas has been actively seeking to deliver energy efficiency measures under the ECO scheme, since its inception in January 2013, primarily through its contractual arrangements, and has now invested in excess of the £420 million committed in 2013 and the £350 million committed in the first half of 2014. Notes to editors

More information about the history of Southwark and its homes.

Southwark experienced huge population growth at a rate never seen before due to the industrial revolution. Coupled with pressures on housing created by the post-war baby boom, and the sheer amount of traditional housing lost to the blitz, the city’s authorities looked to high-rise construction to house London’s growing number of residents.

However, Southwark homes were often constructed from concrete with no opportunity for proper insulation – leaving today’s residents with cold and uncomfortable homes or higher than average fuel bills.

About British Gas’ ECO

The Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) focuses on providing energy efficiency measures to low income and vulnerable consumers and those living in 'hard to treat' properties. The ECO replaces the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target and the Community Energy Saving Programme after the introduction of the Green Deal.
