British Gas announces ten new customer service apprenticeships ahead of National Apprenticeship Week

  • British Gas Business creates 10 further apprenticeships at its Oxford office as National Apprenticeship Week approaches
  • British Gas continues to partner with Abingdon and Witney College to help recruit local people into the new roles
  • British Gas currently has around 1,200 apprentices enrolled on training programmes across the country

British Gas is marking National Apprenticeship Week (9-13 March) by creating ten new customer service apprenticeships at the British Gas Business offices in Oxford.

The new recruits will be the fourth group of apprentices to join the company at its Oxford office, which serves around 27,000 business customers across the country.

British Gas is continuing its partnership with Abingdon and Witney College to help recruit and train the 10 apprentices who, following the success of its previous intakes, will be enrolled onto its Customer Service apprenticeship programme this April.

On completing the 12 month training programme, the apprentices will gain a level 3 qualification in Customer Service and could gain full-time employment with British Gas. They will also complete the prestigious gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Since the scheme launched in September 2012, a total of 18 apprentices are now in full-time roles with a further 10 apprentices set to qualify this September.

Ryan Collins, 17 from Bicester, Oxford, qualified as a Customer Service Apprentice in September 2014 and was successful in securing a permanent position in the company. Ryan left Cooper School in 2013 after gaining 12 GCSEs.

Ryan was encouraged by his family to apply for the apprenticeship. He said: “I was going to go to college to study business but the course would only have meant being in college three days a week. With the apprenticeship, it meant I’d gain a qualification and be working full-time.

“The apprenticeship is such a great opportunity for someone of my age. I’ve come into a large company, got to learn about different parts of the business and I’ve met so many new people. It was definitely the right choice and has given me a real head start in my career.”

Stuart Rolland, Managing Director for British Gas Business, said: “British Gas has a long history of offering quality apprenticeships. From engineering through to customer care, we have around 1,200 people currently enrolled on different programmes across the country.

“We launched the apprenticeship programme three years ago to help bring new talent in to our company to ensure we offer quality customer service to the businesses we work with, and its fitting that we are announcing the next wave of the programme in-line with National Apprenticeship Week.

“Continuing to partner with Abingdon and Witney College, helps us recruit from our local community. The college has excellent links with local schools and we hope that they can use their experience to show people that apprenticeships provide viable career paths."

Jacqui Canton, the college’s Assistant Principal for Employer Engagement and Marketing, said: “We are proud to be working with British Gas to give their customer care apprentices the skills and qualifications which are needed for this crucial role in the business.

“This is a great opportunity if you have drive and determination and a passion for customer care. As well as on the job training at British Gas, successful candidates will achieve a level 3 qualification, complete the prestigious gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and have the opportunity to graduate to a career as a Customer Relationship Manager.”
