British Gas Searches For New Sparks To Join Staines Apprenticeship Scheme

  • British Gas is offering a two year Information Technology (IT) apprenticeship
  • Seven new roles will be based at the company’s offices in Staines
  • An open day will take place during National Apprenticeship Week to officially launch the recruitment drive
  • The apprentices will gain a Level 4 apprenticeship on completing the programme

British Gas is searching for seven new apprentices to join its 900-strong team at one of the company’s offices in Staines.

Ahead of National Apprenticeship Week (9-13 March), the company is announcing seven new Information Technology (IT) apprenticeship roles to start in September.

British Gas is hosting an ‘Information Technology Open Day’ (Tuesday, 10 March) to give people the opportunity to find out more about the apprenticeship scheme.

This recruitment drive for apprentices builds on the success of the most recent group of local apprentices, who joined the scheme last September. A total of 70 apprentices have joined the programme since it launched in 2011.

Spencer Evans-Walker, 19, from Slough, is one of the apprentices currently enrolled on the scheme. He said: “I know the benefits of apprenticeships from personal experience. Both my dad and uncle were apprentices and are now working in senior roles with the same companies. So when the opportunity came up at British Gas, I could see real potential in taking the apprenticeship route.

“Just six months in at British Gas and I’m enjoying being part of a team. I’ve gained hands-on experience and training. I just wouldn’t get this at college or university.

“I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone looking to get a foot on the career ladder. You can earn while you learn and specialise in an area of business you feel passionate about.”

The two year apprenticeship programme will give the successful recruits the knowledge and skills needed to start a career in IT. They will also gain a Level 4 apprenticeship (Diploma in ICT Systems and Principles) on successfully completing the programme.

David Cooper, Chief Information Officer at British Gas, said: “At British Gas, it’s important for us to offer apprenticeships to help bring fresh talent into the business.

"Each year, we recruit a number of apprentices from a range of backgrounds and of different ages, who get to experience many opportunities within Information Technology.

“It’s amazing how fast people can develop and the value they bring to the business when they’re given the chance. It’s really pleasing to see how our apprentices have already grown by being a part of this scheme.”
