British Gas successfully renews the Community Mark, recognising its excellence in community investment

British Gas has been recognised for its commitment to being a responsible company after its Community Mark from Business in the Community (BITC) was renewed.

The Community Mark recognises businesses, which are leading the way in supporting local communities.

British Gas is one of 36 organisations to hold the award, collectively investing over £2.06 billion in their communities in 2014.

The sought after standard is given to companies who put community at the heart of their business. Community Mark holders prioritise the most pressing issues in their communities, and make a measurable difference across different areas of responsible business: from helping disadvantaged people into employment and supporting social enterprises to compete for business, to building long term partnerships with schools.

British Gas continues to be recognised for working to make sure people who need it most always have access to power and warmth, and excellent customer service.

Among its activities to support communities are

  • The British Gas Energy Trust which supports people struggling to pay their energy bills, with grants and debt advice. Over the last decade the company has invested over £75 million in the Trust.
  • Helping to build the skills Britain needs for a bright future through apprenticeships
  • A schools programme, Generation Green, which encourages young people to learn about energy.

British Gas Director of Sustainability Bryan Halliday, commented: “We are delighted to once again be recognised by BITC.”

Stephen Howard, Business in the Community’s Chief Executive said: “I congratulate British Gas for continuing to be part of the exclusive network of Community Mark companies today.

Community Mark holders are at the heart of this movement, demonstrating an impressive commitment to identifying and responding to social needs. Crucially, these companies understand that excellence in community investment not only has a positive and valuable impact on society, but also creates real business benefits, and British Gas continues to demonstrate this.”

About Business in the Community

Business in the Community is the Prince’s Responsible Business Network. Our members work together to tackle a wide range of issues that are essential to building a fairer society and a more sustainable future.

Responsible business is about how a business makes its money not just how it spends its profit. It is about managing growth responsibly while reducing dependency on natural resources. It is about how the business operates as an employer, supplier and customer and how as a neighbour it helps to create vibrant communities where people can flourish.

With the encouragement of strong leadership, we are proving responsible business can be a force for positive change – and that tackling social and environmental issues can return financial value.

We are a business-led, issue focused charity with more than 30 years’ experience of mobilising business. We engage thousands of businesses through our programmes driven by our core membership of over 800 organisations from small enterprises to global corporations
