Households could save £1.5bn on their energy bills

New research from British Gas and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) reveals that, by 2020, the UK could be saving £1.5bn on its energy bills through increased adoption of energy saving measures[i].

Homes that have taken advantage of all the available energy saving measures could see an annual dual fuel bill that is £303 cheaper than a home with no energy efficiency measures.

Cebr’s report predicts that the combination of loft and cavity wall insulation along with a new boiler will make the biggest impact to energy saving, contributing 38% to the reduction in energy demand over the next five years.

Stephen Beynon, Managing Director at British Gas Residential Energy, commented: “We are already starting to see big changes in the consumer energy market. All homes are set to have smart meters by 2020 and we are seeing increased take up of innovative technologies such as Hive Active Heating. We commissioned this report to provide real clarity on the energy-saving potential of these measures, enabling households to weigh up the different options available and take real control over their energy use.”

The economic report uses energy consumption figures from 75,000 British Gas customers and Government data to reveal the savings that could be made in 2020:

To help households understand and control their energy use, British Gas is leading the way with innovative digital tools. British Gas has installed more than 1.9 million free smart meters across Britain’s homes and over 250,000 people are currently using Hive Active Heating™.
