Don’t delay, deal with energy debts today urges British Gas

  • British Gas helps 9,000 people through partnership with StepChange Debt Charity
  • British Gas Energy Trust invests  £85m+ helping 175,000 people with debt problems
  • Energy supplier urges any customers with money worries to get in touch

To mark Debt Awareness Week (25-31 January 2016) British Gas is highlighting a range of ways in which it and partner organisations can help people deal with energy debt.

British Gas works closely with a number of organisations to help those facing difficulties with debt including StepChange Debt Charity and the British Gas Energy Trust (an independent charity).

The company also provides direct help for customers. This includes helping thousands of people, who are having difficulty paying their bills, with an interest-free debt repayment plan. The company also helps millions of people with energy saving measures and has 1.5m customers registered on a Priority Services Register, which offers additional help for disabled or chronically ill customers and those of pensionable age.

More than 9,000 people have been helped by a British Gas/StepChange partnership which sees those in need receive specialist support and advice from trained professionals.

Mike O’Connor, Chief Executive, StepChange Debt Charity said:

“We are very grateful to British Gas for supporting Debt Awareness Week. British Gas deserve enormous credit for the vital work they do in reaching out to people who are struggling financially.

Debt can have a devastating impact on people’s lives, with knock-on effects for their families. There are still 2.6m people in the UK in severe problem debt. Working in partnership with organisations like British Gas can make a real difference in helping them to get back on their feet and improving their lives and the lives of their family.”

Since it was founded in 2004, the British Gas Energy Trust has invested more than £85m in helping over 175,000 people with grants and debt advice via a network of debt advisors across the UK.

Imelda Redmond CBE, Chair of the British Gas Energy Trust, said:

“The Trust is committed to helping as many people as possible whether through direct financial assistance, help with the purchase of appliances or through the many voluntary organisations we fund to provide money and energy debt advice.”

British Gas Energy Trust can be contacted on 01733 421060 or by visiting: www.britishgasenergytrust.org.uk

Partnerships with StepChange and the British Gas Energy Trust are not the only way in which the company can help those at risk of debt. For example, in 2016 British Gas plans to provide almost 20,000 households with a free or low-cost gas replacement boiler as part of a new scheme for those on income related benefits. Applicants do NOT need to be British Gas customers. This will not only help keep homes warmer but will also heat them more cheaply.

Brian Halliday, Director of Sustainability at British Gas said:

“We‘ve provided millions of pounds to help people deal with their energy debts and we’ve prioritised people who need our support to reduce their energy use. By working with specialist partner organisations such as StepChange and the British Gas Energy Trust we can do even more.

We know that many people may worry about energy bills, but we’re here to help and can easily be contacted on Freephone 0800 048 0202.”
