Are You Living In One Of London's 'Smartest' Constituencies?

  • Bromley and Chislehurst revealed as the top constituency in London for upgrading to British Gas smart meters
  • 'Smartest area’ crown comes as the company installs its 3 millionth smart meter this month

Londoners are looking to get energy savvy and help keep their bills down, according to new figures revealed by British Gas.

Bromley and Chislehurst constituency has been revealed as the ‘smartest’ area in London, with more than 7,100 British Gas smart meters installed in the area so far, helping thousands of residents monitor their household energy use every day. 

The nation’s biggest energy and services company published the figures as it installed its 3 millionth domestic smart meter this month. Smart meters come with a display monitor that shows how much energy is being used in near real-time, in pounds and pence, allowing customers to see how much they are using and know exactly how much it is costing. 

British Gas customer Clive Thompson lives in Bromley and recently had a smart meter installed. Clive said: “The installation went really smoothly and the engineer gave us lots of tips about how to get the best from our meter and display. Living in a big house, we were really keen to understand how much energy we use. 

“We’ve definitely changed our behaviour now we can see exactly what we’re using and when. We’ve reprogrammed the timer on our boiler so we don’t heat the house when we don’t need to and it’s really interesting to see which appliances use lots of energy and those that use very little. We’re far more aware of what we’re using now which is helping us to be more energy efficient.”

Craig Hart is one of hundreds of British Gas Smart Energy Experts installing smart meters in homes across the capital.  He said: “More and more people are recognising the benefits of running their homes efficiently, which is demonstrated by the fact we’ve now installed 3 million smart meters in homes around Britain.  

“In London, we’re increasingly seeing households take control of their energy usage by upgrading to smart meters, so they can See their consumption in pounds and pence. Smart meters also send accurate meter readings to us, if you’re a British Gas customer, which means an end to estimated bills.”

About Smart Meters 
Smart meters replace existing standard gas and electricity meters and will be introduced in homes and businesses as standard by 2020. They come with a smart energy monitor that displays how much gas and electricity is being used, and its cost in pounds and pence, in near-real time. That information is shared with energy suppliers automatically, putting an end to estimated bills and meter readings for customers with credit meters, who pay by Direct Debit or quarterly by cash, cheque or card. British Gas is currently trialling Smart Pay As You Go with customers using prepayment meters. That will mean customers will be able to see their current balance and how much credit is remaining on the smart energy monitor. They will also be able to top up online, by smartphone app, over the phone or by visiting a local shop. British Gas is also trialling apps that enable smart meter customers to get information about their energy use on their smartphone. The information from smart meters gives customers a greater understanding of how they’re using their energy.
