10,000 British Gas employees trained as Dementia Friends

  • At least 100,000 customers estimated to live alone at home with the condition
  • A third of the company’s workforce have received training to become Dementia Friends
  • Key milestone in British Gas’ pledge to become a fully dementia-friendly energy and services business

To mark Dementia Awareness Week (15-21 May), British Gas is announcing that more than 10,000 employees - a third of its workforce - have now received bespoke training to help support customers with dementia.

British Gas serves around 10 million homes across Britain and estimates that at least 100,000 customers live alone, in their own homes, with the condition. Many others live with partners who also have dementia or other serious health conditions.

British Gas made the commitment to become a fully dementia-friendly organisation in January last year. The company partnered with Alzheimer’s Society in England and Wales and Alzheimer Scotland to create a bespoke version of the renowned Dementia Friends scheme for its employees.

Company team leaders, supervisors, and more than 50 Dementia Champions are rolling out the training directly to staff across more than 15 sites. The contact centre based training includes staff using telephone and email contact right through to social media and web-chat.

As well as encouraging employees to become Dementia Friends, the company also supports its own employees with dementia or with caring responsibilities. Some employees are also working with local community groups to better support those living with dementia.

Steve Crabb, Director responsible for Consumer Vulnerability at British Gas, said: “Helping customers with dementia is a major priority for British Gas. We are incredibly proud that 10,000 of our people have already made the commitment to become a Dementia Friend.

“That’s a third of our workforce, and it means that if you’ve called British Gas to your home for a boiler service, or if you’re phoning or web-chatting with us, there’s a good chance the person dealing with you will be a Dementia Friend.”

The company has also worked with Alzheimer’s Society to co-produce a Dementia Friendly Business Guide, aimed at highlighting best practice and outlining a set of commitments for businesses across all sectors to become Dementia Friendly.

Rob Burley, Director of Campaigns and Partnerships at Alzheimer’s Society, said“Dementia is one of the greatest challenges we face in society today – it’s set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer and someone develops the condition every three minutes.

“Yet too many people face it alone without adequate support. At Alzheimer’s Society we hear day in, day out that people don’t feel included and involved in their communities and are unable to continue doing the things they enjoy.

“All businesses across all sectors have a part to play in tackling the devastating impact of dementia, so we’re delighted to be launching this Dementia Friendly Business Guide in partnership with British Gas. We must all unite now and take action to ensure all communities are open for with dementia.”
