British Gas confirms no customer data involved in Equifax cyber breach

On Friday 8th September 2017 and over the following weekend, news media reported a data breach at the company Equifax in the United States. Some of these reports mentioned British Gas as one of several major British clients of Equifax or its subsidiaries, and suggested that data relating to British Gas customers might have been affected.
The security of our customers’ data is a top priority, so we investigated this issue urgently and thoroughly. Equifax has confirmed to us that British Gas customers’ personal data was not impacted, accessed, or in any way compromised through the cyber incident. Our customers need take no action, and we would reassure them that their most sensitive data such as credit card information or bank details were never shared with Equifax in the first place.
