The Rt Hon Edward Davey, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, today officially opened the new British Gas office in Oxford.

British Gas in Oxford

The Cowley site is the headquarters of British Gas Business, which serves almost 950,000 business sites across the UK. 620 British Gas employees are based at the site.

British Gas is a major employer in Oxford and, through its operations in the region, contributes £56 million a year to the Oxford economy1.

Showcase for Managing Energy and Saving Money

During a tour of the state of the art premises, Mr Davey was able to experience first-hand how British Gas is making it easy for customers to manage their energy.

British Gas is leading the way on helping homes and business reduce energy usage and save money. With its state of the art biomass boilers, solar panel array and energy efficiency lighting, the energy supplier’s new Oxford building, has been awarded an ‘A’ rated Energy Performance Certificate. This means the building is on average 40% more efficient than a typical office building.

Mr Davey also met British Gas Business apprentices, who are all set to graduate from the accredited British Gas apprenticeship training scheme – rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, the official education inspectorate. On graduation, the apprentices will be qualified to join British Gas Business in roles helping corporate customers manage their energy.

The Rt Hon Edward Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change said:

“I am really pleased to be here to open this incredibly impressive building. It’s a great showcase for the work British Gas Business has put in to help businesses become more energy efficient, and reduce their energy costs.”

Stephen Beynon, Managing Director of British Gas Business, said:

“We are delighted to welcome the Secretary of State to our state of the art new site in the city. Oxford is an important location for British Gas, bringing together all of our operations to serve business customers across the UK helping them to reduce their energy use and save money.”
