British Gas appoints new commercial director to lead Smart Metering roll-out for customers

British Gas has announced the appointment of Paul Nickson MBE, as Commercial Director, British Gas Smart Metering, effective immediately.

The Government has required energy companies to ensure all homes and businesses have smart meters installed within the next seven years. British Gas has taken the lead and has already installed a million smart meters – more than any other energy supplier.

Paul will work to make customers aware of the smart meter roll-out, the benefits of smart meters and how they can get the best out of being a smart meter customer.

Smart meters show, for the first time, how much gas and electricity is being used as it’s used, and its cost in pounds and pence via an in-home display called a smart energy monitor. They also put an end to estimated bills by automatically sending meter readings to energy suppliers, meaning customers only pay for the energy they use.

In addition to his role at British Gas, Paul is on the board of the Central Delivery Body, which has been established by Energy UK on behalf of the larger energy suppliers. The Body will manage consumer engagement around the smart meter roll-out from an industry perspective.

Formerly Head of Arrivals & Departures, London 2012, Paul brings with him a wealth of experience in managing large scale, consumer-facing operations. At London 2012, he was responsible for ensuring a positive journey for 100,000 key international visitors, including media, athletes and dignitaries as they travelled in and out of the capital for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Paul was awarded an MBE for his services during the Games.

Prior to his role at London 2012, Paul was Customer Experience Manager, Terminal 5 and 3 for British Airways at Heathrow Airport, ensuring more than 30 million passengers moved through the terminals seamlessly every year.

Paul Nickson, Commercial Director, British Gas Smart Metering, said:

“Smart meters represent one of the biggest changes in our homes since central heating became a common fixture, so I am very pleased to be part of the team at such an important time for British Gas and our customers. Smart meters will put an end to estimated bills and provide information on energy use to our customers in near real time. With a million meters installed, we’re well on our way to delivering on our commitment to bring this technology and innovation to homes around the country, and ultimately help more of our customers control their energy use.

“There’s still a long way to go and I’m looking forward to working with the wider energy industry to ensure all households and businesses are aware of the opportunity that smart meters present for our energy future.”

Paul will join the Smart team headed up by Stuart Rolland, Managing Director, British Gas Smart Metering.
