British Gas to acquire technology company AlertMe, to extend its leadership in innovating for customers

  • Acquisition builds on British Gas' leadership in connected homes technology, giving end-to-end control over creation and delivery of new products and services
  • Customers to see new products and services, building on Hive Active Heating, the remote heating and hot water product

British Gas today announced it is to acquire AlertMe, a UK-based company that creates products and services linked by the internet of things to enable connected homes.

The deal will create the UK’s leading connected homes provider, by bringing together British Gas’ ability to innovate for mass market consumers with AlertMe’s next generation Internet of Things technology and expertise. The acquisition will create a highly experienced team to accelerate the development of new connected home services in the UK and worldwide, including to British Gas’ 11 million customer homes in Britain.

British Gas set out to build a leadership position in connected homes in September 2013, launching the product brand, ‘Hive, by British Gas’. More than 150,000 of its customers are already able to control their heating and hot water remotely from a smartphone or tablet with Hive Active Heating[1]. The award-winning Hive Active Heating is powered by AlertMe’s platform.

The net cost of this acquisition to British Gas will be £44 million, taking into account an existing 21% holding in AlertMe. It is anticipated that the transaction will be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2015.
