What are smart meters?

Smart meters are gas and electricity meters that can make your life easier.

  • They’ll automatically send us your meter readings, so you don’t have to.
  • They come with a smart energy monitor that shows you how much energy you’re using in pounds and pence, as you use it.
  • You’ll be able to log on to see how you’re using your energy.
  • We are trialling smart meters for Pay As You Go customers, you can top up anywhere using our App, online or over the phone and view your balance on your handy smart energy monitor.

And you can get them installed for free

They’re part of the government’s plan to reduce carbon emissions. Smart meters will make it easier for homes around the country to save energy.

How do smart meters help you?

Getting smart meters in your home

Everyone will be offered smart meters by 2020.

We’re rolling out smart meters now but with about ten million customers, we’re doing it step by step.

You can fill out our quick questionnaire to check if you're eligible to get smart meters now. If you're not, we’ll put you on our waiting list and contact you as soon as we can fit your smart meters.

All we ask is that you have both your gas and electricity with us. If you don't, it's easy to switch to us.

What happens on the day?

You’ve booked your smart meter appointment.

This is what you can expect on the day:

  • Your Smart Energy Expert will call you when they’re on their way.
  • Your appointment will last about two and a half hours.
  • We’ll need to turn off your power – but not for long.
  • Once your smart meters have been fitted, we’ll show you how to use your smart energy monitor.

You’ll be able to start making savings straightaway – that’s all there is to it.

Smart meters come with a smart energy monitor to keep an eye on your spending and energy use

Traffic lights show you how much electricity you're using and a flame tells you about your gas use, so you’re able to change things straight away. You can put your smart energy monitor anywhere in your home.

How smart meters work

Smart meters take accurate meter readings of your energy use every half hour, daily or once a month. It’s up to you.

Readings are sent to us with wireless technology, like your mobile phone.

You'll get an accurate energy bill without having to send us meter readings.

Our interactive online tool, my energy, gives you a detailed look at your energy use.

You'll be able to:

  • Track your energy use by day, week, month and year.
  • See how you’re doing compared to homes around you.
  • Get personalised tips on how to save energy and money.
  • See how much you’re likely to spend on energy for things, like cooking the Sunday roast.

And, the more you tell us about your home, the more specific tips and advice you’ll get.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Will I get new smart meters for both gas and electricity?

A: Yes. You'll only need one smart energy monitor though, as it’ll show both your gas and electricity use and give you an idea of how much they’re costing you.

Q. Do I have to pay for my smart meters?

A: No, there’s nothing to pay. We're installing smart meters and smart energy monitors for free, as part of a nationwide upgrade for all our customers.

Q. Will I be on a different tariff when I get my smart meters?

A: No, you can stay on the same tariff. Though we’ll be introducing some smart meter specific tariffs in the future, so look out for those.
