What we do for those who need extra support

Picture this: It’s a cold winter’s day and you wake up to find that your boiler has broken down. For most of us this is an inconvenience but for many it is a genuinely alarming prospect.

Take Doreen Watson, for example. This elderly lady, a British Gas customer on a low income and struggling with energy debt, experienced a boiler breakdown, leaving her without hot water. See the video of Doreen’s story.

Thankfully, her case was handled by the British Gas Energy Trust, a charity that, since 2004, has helped those struggling with energy debts by clearing their domestic bills, including gas and rent, as well as providing funds for household essentials.

In Doreen’s case, the British Gas Energy Trust gave her a new boiler, installed it, and completely cleared her debts too. The need for extra support, whether in the short or long term, is something that can affect almost anyone. That’s why British Gas also has a Home Energy Care team on hand to identify and help customers who need extra support.

This could be by placing customers on the Priority Services Register, or by providing other services such as specially designed adapters, large print and braille bills for the visually impaired and free gas safety checks for eligible customers.
