Volunteer Power: Making a Difference Together

As we mark National Volunteers’ Week in the UK from 2nd to 8th June 2025, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the incredible power of volunteering as a force for good in our communities, and why we are so committed to getting our team members involved.
As part of our People and Planet Plan, we have committed to delivering 100,000 days of volunteering by 2030. This ambitious goal underscores our long-term commitment to making a tangible difference in our communities and supporting causes that matter to our people.
The Big Difference – giving back to the community
Volunteers’ Week is a time to celebrate the millions of people who give their time, energy, and passion to make a difference. At British Gas, we are proud to stand alongside them. Our corporate volunteering programme, The Big Difference, is an initiative that connects our people with causes they care about, strengthens our culture, and deepens our impact in the communities we serve.
Award winning employee engagement
This year, we’re especially proud to share that our colleagues have been recognised on a national stage. We were honoured to receive Employee Engagement Initiative of the Year at the Business Charity Awards and Corporate Volunteering Programme of the Year at the Better Society Awards. These accolades are a testament to the dedication of our people, the strength of our partnerships, and the belief that we can all be a force for good.
Behind every award and statistic is a story. A story of colleagues mentoring young people, supporting local food banks, planting trees, and sharing skills with charities that need them most. These are not just acts of kindness—they are acts of leadership, empathy, and purpose.

Our national and local volunteering approach
Our approach balances national and local partnerships. Nationally, we work with Groundwork and The Conservation Volunteers where our teams roll up their sleeves to create safe, sustainable, community spaces. With Age UK and the Royal Voluntary Service, our colleagues offer companionship to people when they are at their most vulnerable.
Locally, we have a network of truly amazing employee charity champions who develop relationships with grassroots causes, ensuring targeted impact in the towns and cities we work in. We also celebrate the hundreds of colleagues who spend their time on the touchline and the team minibus – volunteering in grassroots local sport – through kit and equipment funding.

Thank you to our volunteers, our partners and our customers
So, we want to say a Big Thank You to you all: To our volunteers, your commitment inspires us all. To our partners, your collaboration makes our impact possible. And to our customers: Thank you for supporting a business that is committed to making a Big Difference.
