Volunteering in the community
Each year colleagues that are part of the British Gas family, are given the opportunity to dedicate two days to volunteer in their local communities. Our efforts are wide-ranging, from food banks and schools to parks, community gardens and charities.
We’re there with a can-do attitude and our sleeves rolled up, ready to help where we can. Take a look at some of the organisations and causes we’ve helped in this year.
Family Support, Aberlour
The garden facilities at Aberlour in Moray’s Family Support charity were improved by our volunteers who repaired, painted and fitted new fencing, removed old equipment and tidied up overgrown trees. This helped create a safer and more enjoyable environment, helping disadvantaged children and families in Scotland have a brighter future.
Whitstable beach clean
Our volunteers headed down to Whitstable in Kent to participate in a volunteer beach clean. We had a lot of encouragement from the locals as we helped get the beach ready for the summer season.
Sebby’s Corner, North London
A team of our heating engineers spent the day at Sebby’s Corner in North London. Sebby’s Corner provides much-needed support for families who are living in poverty, who’ve fled domestic abuse, refugees, asylum seekers, and victims of modern slavery and human trafficking. Our volunteers helped by sorting and packing donations ready to be delivered to those in need.
Leicester South Food Bank
In a joint effort from two of our teams, we recently donated 283kg worth of food items and other essentials to the Leicester South Food Bank, part of The Trussell Trust, which is working tirelessly to help people in need.
Leicester 4th Scouts
Leicester 4th Scouts hut has had a makeover, thanks to one of our local team of volunteers. Teaching children, aged from five upwards, life skills in a fun and inclusive way, the Scout leaders are all volunteers themselves too.
SANDS
A longer term project is our work with SANDS, the UK’s leading baby loss charity. Our incredibly talented volunteer knitters and crocheters craft blankets that are added to memory boxes given to families grieving the loss of a baby. To date our busy crafters have produced over 200 beautiful blankets.
