What are smart tariffs?

Smart time-of-use tariffs help you run your home for less by giving you cheaper electricity during off-peak electricity hours.

They're possible thanks to your smart meter, which can see how much energy you're using and when. That way we know how much to charge you at the cheaper rate.

Another great thing about our smart tariffs is that using off-peak electricity is better for the environment. So it won't just be money you'll be saving.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do smart tariffs work?

All of our smart tariffs offer cheaper electricity prices during off-peak hours. So the more off-peak electricity you use, the more money you can save.

They work hand in hand with your smart meter, which tells us how much electricity you're using and when. Most people use smart tariffs alongside EV chargers, heat pumps, solar panels and battery systems to make the most of cheaper off-peak electricity rates.

Do I need a smart meter to get a smart tariff?

Yes, you'll need a smart meter to switch to a smart tariff. That's because the price of electricity on our smart tariffs changes during the day. And we can only see what you're using at any given time with a smart meter.

If you're already a British Gas customer, getting your free smart meter fitted is easy. Simply log into your online account and let's get you booked in.

What's the difference between off-peak electricity, time of use (TOU) tariffs and smart tariffs?

Tariff terminology can be confusing, especially when suppliers use different names for similar products.

Here's what people usually mean by off-peak electricity, time-of-use (TOU) tariffs, and smart tariffs, so you can understand the differences and decide what might suit your home.

Off-peak electricity: Cheaper electricity during set low-demand hours (often overnight).

Time-of-use tariffs: Electricity costs different amounts at different times (often peak/shoulder/off-peak).

Smart tariffs: Use smart meter readings to enable time-based pricing and (sometimes) more flexible rates.

Can smart tariffs help me save money?

Yes, we've created them especially to help you save. The trick is to make the most of electricity when it's cheaper, during off-peak hours. For you, that might mean scheduling your EV to charge overnight, boosting the heating for just a few hours in the early afternoon, or waiting until right before you go to bed to put the dishwasher on.

If you generate your own renewable energy at home, sign up to our Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff and we'll even pay you for the electricity you're not using.

What homes are best suited to smart tariffs?

Smart tariffs are ideal for homes with solar panels or EV chargers. As well as homes with heat pumps, other electric heating systems or battery storage.

These are the homes that could potentially save the most money with a smart tariff, by benefitting from cheaper electricity during off-peak hours. Or by selling excess solar energy on our Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff.

Is switching to a smart tariff complicated?

Not at all. It's much simpler than you might think. Get started with an online quote. It'll only take a few minutes. Then pick the tariff you'd like to switch to and leave the rest to us. We'll take care of everything.
