How to read your smart meter

Submit a meter reading

You don't normally need to take any readings with a smart meter, it will send those to us automatically. If we’ve asked you to provide meter readings, please use the instructions below.

Gas meters

If British Gas fitted your Smart Gas meter:
 

  1. The screen will probably be off. Press the red button to wake it up.
  2. Once it says Credit On you can press the red button again.
  3. The screen will say Meter Index. That's your meter reading.

Electricity meters

 


Does your meter have two barcodes on it, like this?
 

If your meter has two barcodes on it, here’s how to take a meter reading:
 

  1. Tap the green A button 3 or 4 times to go through the options.
  2. Keep scrolling through options until the meter reading display screen shows "Rate 01 Act Imp". This shows your meter reading. If you have a time of use/two rate tariff , press the button again for "Rate 02 Act Imp" for the second rate reading.
  3. If you go too far, keep pressing the button. It'll loop back around.

If your meter has three barcodes on it, here’s how to take a meter reading:
 

  1. Press green A button twice and then hold down to get to menus.
  2. Keep scrolling through options until the meter reading display screen shows "Total Act Import". This shows your meter reading. If you have a time of use/two rate tariff, press the button again for "Total Act Import 2" for the second rate reading.
  3. If you go too far, keep pressing the button. It'll loop back around.

Why do I need to give you a meter reading if I have smart meters?

If you have smart meters and we’ve asked you to provide meter readings, it’s because we’re unable to take automated reads. Some first-generation smart meters are not compatible with all energy suppliers, so they can’t send reads. This is a temporary issue – we'll upgrade your smart meters remotely as soon as possible.

Please send us your smart reads via our online form so you get more accurate bills. We’ll email you a reminder each month if we need a read from you.
