Check how much gas and electricity you’re using:

  • Tap the screen
  • Choose either the gas view, electricity view or have both

See how much you’re spending:

  • Tap now or so far today
  • Your smart energy monitor will show you how much energy you’re using in pounds and pence

Hint: Check your energy spend in the morning and in the evening to help you work out your average daily spend.

Hint: Under the ‘History’ section you can choose a time period (for example a specific day) and see when you used the most energy, and how much this might have cost. So you could see how much energy you use when you run the washing machine for an hour and make lunch.

What do the lights on my smart energy monitor mean?

The red, amber and green lights at the bottom of your monitor are called consumption LEDs.

They show you at a glance whether your electricity consumption’s high (red), medium (amber), or low (green).

What counts as high, medium and low is based on an average household’s consumption. But you can set them yourself, if you’d prefer.

Is my energy consumption high, low or average?

The light on your monitor changes colour depending on how much energy you’re using right now. Green means it’s low, amber shows it’s medium and red shows it’s high.

What counts as high, medium and low is based on average consumption. But you can set them yourself, if you’d prefer.

What does my smart energy monitor do?

It tells you how you’re using gas and electricity:

  • How much you’re using right now
  • What it’s costing you, in pounds and pence
  • How it compares with the last couple of days, weeks and months

That makes it easier for you to see how to save money – by showing you what happens when you switch things off or turn them down.

Your smart energy monitor is for information only and should be used as a guide to manage your usage. Your smart meter sends the readings to us and are used to create your bill.

Setting a budget

When you set a budget on your smart energy monitor, you’re setting a target for how much you want to spend today, this week, or this month.

It helps you keep track, so you know when you’re getting close to your limit.

Don’t worry: you can carry on using gas and electricity after you’ve hit your budget. If you’ve set a budget on your smart energy monitor, it doesn’t update anything else. The same goes for the budget on our app.

You can see your energy usage and billing information in your online account. Or if you’re a Pay As You Go customer, just get in touch and we’ll send it out to you.

Where's the best place to put my smart energy monitor?

Plug in your smart energy monitor where you can regularly see it, as practically close to your electricity meter as you can.

Just make sure it’s inside your home but not in direct sunlight.

Lots of people keep their monitor out on display so it’s easy for them to check and see how much energy they’re using.

Will I lose all my data if I unplug my smart energy monitor?

No. It automatically refreshes your information when you plug it back in.

How much electricity does a smart energy monitor use?

Our smart energy monitor uses about 1 kilowatt hour of electricity a year.

Based on current prices, that’s less than £1 per year – a good investment, considering smart meters can help you better control the amount of energy you use and lower your bills.

I’ve been away from home – why does my smart energy monitor show that I’ve been using energy?

The cost of your energy is split into two parts:

  1. The standing charge – this is a set amount per day
  2. The unit rate – this is based on your tariff and how much energy you use

We apply the standing charge on a daily basis, which means that even if you’re not at home and not using any gas or electricity, you’ll still pay a small daily fee.

The standing charge will appear on your monitor between midnight and 1am every day, so your smart energy monitor will show a slight spike in energy use at this time.

The knock-on effect is that when you check your smart energy monitor in the morning, it’ll look like you’ve used a small amount of energy overnight.

My smart energy monitor has gone blank

If your smart energy monitor isn’t displaying your energy use, it’s probably having trouble connecting to your smart meters. Here’s how to fix this:

  • Unplug your smart energy monitor
  • Move it closer to your electricity meter
  • Plug your smart energy monitor back in
  • Wait seven days (most smart energy monitors re-start automatically within a week)
  • If it’s still not working after seven days, please contact our live chat agents

Please note: When your monitor comes back on, on some models you might see a red or orange triangle. It’s nothing to worry about – it just means you have unread alerts from us.

If your smart energy monitor has been off for longer than 70 minutes, you’ll need to wait another 70 minutes to see your gas data. This is because the smart energy monitor isn’t designed to show gas data more than 70 minutes old.

How do I read and clear any alerts on my monitor?

To read or clear the alert:

  • Select Menu at the bottom right of the screen
  • Use the arrow button to select Alerts
  • Use the arrow button to highlight the alert you want and press Read
  • If you want to delete the selected alert, press Delete at the bottom of the screen.
    Alternatively, just press Close
  • Press the British Gas flame to go back to the home screen – you’ll find the triangle has disappeared

What do I do if my smart energy monitor stops working?

Your smart meter comes with a smart energy monitor (in home display), – it tells you how you’re using gas and electricity.

If your smart energy monitor stops working check your power cable is inserted correctly and your power supply is switched on at the wall.

If it’s still not working, try using fresh batteries. If batteries fix the issue, then the problem is with the cable.

If batteries don’t help, then the problem is with the smart energy monitor.

Once you know the problem is with the cable or the smart energy monitor, contact our live chat agents, and we'll talk you through what to do next.

How do I get a replacement smart energy monitor?

If you’ve had your smart energy meter monitor (in home display), fitted by us, within 12 months we’re happy to replace it free of charge, contact our live chat agents for more information.

If we fitted your smart energy monitor (in home display) more than 12 months ago or it was fitted by a different energy supplier unfortunately we cannot replace it.

We always listen to your response.
