Our top tips
If you’ve got a heat pump at home, these suggestions could help you make the most of half-price electricity during off-peak hours with your Heat Power tariff:
- Hot water - try setting your hot water to come on early in the morning, then give it a little boost between 1pm and 4pm if you need extra for the evening
- Heating - bump up your thermostat by 1–2°C during off-peak times and down by 1-2°C during peak times. Turning it down a little could help you save and still enjoy the extra heat you’ve stored
- Appliances - run your energy-hungry appliances like the washing machine, dishwasher or tumble dryer when electricity is cheaper
- Got an EV or home battery? - charge them overnight at half the price.

About Heat Power
How much will I save?
Your savings depend on how much electricity you use off-peak hours and your home setup. Our quotes are based on a heat pump using around 35% off-peak electricity - but if you have an EV or home storage battery, you could save even more.
Here’s how you can save:
- Heating - you don’t need to change your routine, but you could save more by nudging your thermostat up by 1–2°C during off-peak times and down by 1–2°C during peak hours. For example, if you usually keep your home at 20°C, you could boost it to 22°C early in the morning and between 1–4pm, then drop it to 19°C during peak hours. If you’re out during the day or prefer cooler nights, you could even go down to 18°C for a few hours.
- Hot water - heating your tank to 50°C usually takes 30–75 minutes, depending on size. You can set it to heat up early in the morning, and if you need more later, top it up between 1–4pm. If you find you’re running low on hot water during the day, try running it overnight or slightly increasing the temperature.
- Appliances - use the timers on your washing machine, dishwasher, and tumble dryer to make sure they run only during those half-price windows. Just remember, it's always safest to run large appliances like washing machines when you're awake and around, not while you're fast asleep.
- EVs and home storage batteries - this is the big one. Program your EV and home battery to charge during the super-long overnight cheap window, 12am–7am. This is the easiest way to boost your savings.
Do I need to change my hot water or heating schedule?
You should save without changing your schedule — but using more power off-peak could help you save even more.
Should I switch my heat pump off during the peak periods?
No, it’s most efficient when running steadily. Just lowering the temperature by 1–2°C during peak hours could help cut costs without losing comfort.
Signing up and eligibility
Do I need to switch my gas and electricity?
Whether you're already with us or thinking about joining, you can choose the Heat Power tariff for your electricity. And when it comes to your gas, you're free to stay with your current supplier - it’s totally up to you.
What consumption figures do I use when getting a quote?
After your heat pump is installed, your annual electricity and gas consumption will change. You’ll use more electricity than before, and you may no longer use gas – or you might use a lot less gas than you used to. Your quote will be an estimate, but your actual bill will be more accurate as we’ll check your actual energy usage.
Existing customers
We’ll look at your energy usage over the last year when getting your quote. If you’ve had your heat pump for less than 12 months, check your installer’s design documents — they’ll give you your estimated annual energy use.
New customers
We can give you an estimated quote based on the size of your property.* You can also check your installer’s design documents which should give your estimated annual usage.
Why do I need a smart meter?
You need a smart meter so we can see exactly how much electricity you’re using and work out how much to credit you back.
What happens if my smart meter stops working?
If your meter stops sending us readings for any reason, we’ll estimate your average energy usage and payments . If your meter doesn’t send us a reading for over 30 days, we can switch you to our Standard Variable tariff and get in touch to let you know.
Can I sign up for the tariff if I have a prepayment meter?
This fixed tariff is only available to customers who pay by credit (monthly or quarterly bills by Direct Debit). If you have a prepayment meter, you’ll stay on our Standard Variable tariff.
What if I’m already a PeakSaver?
There’s nothing you need to do. We’ll automatically take you off the PeakSave scheme and switch you to our Heat Power tariff, so you benefit from the extra hours of half-price electricity. If you decide to change tariff in the future, you can sign back up to PeakSave.
Payments
Will my Direct Debit change?
When you choose our Heat Power tariff, you’ll select your monthly Direct Debit amount. The weekly credits won’t have any impact on your monthly payments.
If I change tariff, will I still get the Heat Power credit?
No, if you choose another tariff, you’ll no longer benefit from the Heat Power credits. But you can sign back up to PeakSave, so you get half-price electricity on a Sunday, 11am – 4pm.
I haven’t received my account credit?
After switching, we aim to add your credits weekly and they’ll show on your next bill as ‘Heat Power Credit’. If they’re not showing for any reason, chat with us online and one of our friendly advisers will look into this for you.
My credit is lower than I expected?
If you don’t think you’ve been credited the right amount, chat with us online and we’ll check it out.
