What is an EV tariff and how do they work?
EV tariffs are designed for electric vehicle owners who charge their cars at home. Unlike other energy tariffs, EV tariffs work with smart meters to offer lower electricity rates during off-peak hours – like the British Gas EV tariff, where you get super-cheap electricity between 12am and 5am every day.
The higher daytime rates are balanced out by lower nighttime costs, helping you save money when you charge your EV overnight.
If you’re a new customer, you'll join us on a standard variable tariff. Then once we’ve set up your account and connected your smart meter, we’ll automatically switch you to our EV tariff.
If you’re an existing customer, simply login to your online account and change to our EV tariff.

Can I use the EV tariff with a home charger, solar panels or a battery?
If you have both an EV charger and a home battery, Charge Power is the tariff for you. It offers half price electricity from 12am to 5am1 every night and is designed for homes with solar and battery systems.
You can charge your EV and your home battery overnight, helping you to save money and lower your carbon footprint.

How to apply for an electric vehicle (EV) tariff with British Gas
1. Apply online
If you’re a new customer, you'll join us on a standard variable tariff. Then once we’ve set up your account and connected your smart meter, we’ll automatically switch you to our EV tariff.
If you’re an existing customer, simply login to your online account and change to our EV tariff.
2. What you’ll need
- An electric vehicle you charge at home. We may ask you to prove this
- A smart electricity meter. If you don’t have one yet, we’ll take care of that for you for free
- To pay by Direct Debit
3. Confirmation
We’ll arrange a switch date with your current provider, with no disruption to your energy supply
4. Switch complete
We’ll let you know when your switch to us is complete and when to send us your first meter reading.

How we work out your EV tariff quote
When you get a quote for our EV tariff, we’ll estimate your annual costs. We base this on how much electricity you’ve used in the past. If we don’t know this, we’ll base it on the average amount EV owners normally use.
EV owners typically charge their vehicles about three times a week during off-peak hours, and twice a fortnight during peak hours using 10 kWh of electricity each time. Our estimate assumes that 46% of the total electricity you use is during off-peak hours.
Remember that factors like your car’s age, charging habits and how else you use electricity at home could mean your actual yearly costs differ from our estimate.

Can I get an EV tariff without a smart meter?
Most energy suppliers will require you to have an electricity smart meter to sign up for their EV tariff.
Here at British Gas, all our EV tariff customers need to have an electricity smart meter. It helps us track exactly when you’re using electricity, so you’ll always get the right rates at the right times. And an accurate bill.
If you haven’t already got one, we offer free smart meter installations for all our customers.
Are EV tariffs good value?
For most households with an electric vehicle, an EV tariff could save you money. If you don’t charge much at home or you need to regularly charge your car during peak hours, you won't get the most value from an EV tariff – but otherwise it's a great option.

Will my daytime electricity rate be higher on the EV tariff to offset the cheaper nighttime rate?
Our EV energy tariff is a 'two-rate' tariff that gives you cheaper electricity overnight. You can take advantage of this low-price electricity to charge your car, and power your energy-hungry appliances like washing machines and dishwashers for less.
We try to keep the daytime rate for our EV tariff as close as possible to our normal electricity rates, but they are higher.
When you get an energy quote online, we’ll show you the prices on our EV tariff and all our other tariffs, so you can choose what’s right for you.
How do EV tariffs for home charging compare with rapid charging costs, per mile and per kWh?
Home charging is significantly cheaper than public charging. For example, our EV Power tariff gives you 9.5p per kWh between midnight and 5am – or 7.125p per kWh when combined with Hive Power+ (prices accurate for August 2026). According to Zapmap, the average price in July 2026 of public charging between 3kW and 49kW was 54p per kWh. Ultra-rapid chargers of 50kW and above cost an average of 80p per kWh. Using an average-efficiency EV, Zapmap calculates that the average rapid charger costs 16 pence per mile and ultra-rapid chargers cost 24 pence per mile. With the same vehicle, a driver with EV Power and Hive Power+ would pay just 2p per mile for off-peak charging.
How do I sign up for this EV tariff?

Does the EV tariff work with Economy 7?
Unfortunately, our EV tariff doesn’t work with Economy 7. Your storage heaters wouldn’t work properly if you were to switch, so it’s better for you to stay on your Economy 7 tariff.
Does the EV tariff work with solar panels?
Yes! You can sign up to our EV tariff if you have solar panels at home.
Why do I need a smart electricity meter to sign up for the EV tariff?
A smart meter tells us exactly when you’re using your electricity. We need to know how much energy you’re using during the day and during the cheaper nighttime hours so we can send you accurate bills.
Do I need a smart gas meter to sign up for the EV tariff?
No, you only need a smart electricity meter to sign up for our EV tariff. But we’d still recommend getting a smart gas meter as it can also help you save money at home. And if we supply your gas, we’d be happy to fit one for you for free.
What happens if I move home while I’m on the EV tariff?
If you're moving home, we’d love to come with you. We’d just need to check that everything at your new home works with our EV tariff. So get in touch and we’ll look into signing you up to our EV tariff again once you’ve moved.
What if I want to sign up to the EV tariff, but it’s not possible to install smart meters in my home?
Most homes are suitable for smart meters. But sometimes, we only find out that we’re not able to fit them on installation day. If this happens, you can stay on our EV tariff, but you won’t get the cheaper nighttime rate.
In which case, it probably makes sense to switch to another tariff – just get in touch and we’ll be happy to recommend one, or you can browse all your tariff options in your online account.
You will receive a 50% discount on the tariff unit rate for electricity you usebetween 12am and 5am each day. You will still pay the full daily standing chargeapplicable to your tariff. Tariff prices are subject to change.
Power+ is only available for customers with a compatible EV charger and a British Gas electricity tariff with a smart meter in credit mode. Based on our assumed efficiency conversion of 3.3 miles/kwh, savings assume that you are on the British Gas EV EV Power Mar28 v3 tariff (correct as of 01/10/2026) and all charging is in Power+ mode in your off peak period. If on a Time of Use tariff, we will only charge your EV during the off-peak window while in the Power+ schedule mode.
We match the electricity you buy from us on this tariff with 100% renewable energy by purchasing Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origins (REGOs) certificates. Customers receive electricity via the National Grid, not directly from generators.
