Why choose Green Drive Nov 2020

Save money

  • We’ll give you a lower price for the electricity you use at night so you can charge your EV for less
  • Lock in this special price until 30th November 2020 by managing your account completely online
  • No exit fees if you decide to switch to another tariff or to a different energy provider

Stay in control

  • Use your car dashboard or car manufacturer’s app to schedule your EV charges during the cheaper night time hours
  • Get a free smart meter upgrade to help keep an eye on your spending

Help the environment

  • We’ll match 100% of the electricity you use on this tariff by buying the same amount from renewable sources through Guarantees of Origin
  • We’ll offset double the gas you use on this tariff through Certified Emission Reduction Certificates (CERs) from selected emission reduction projects in developing countries

What you need to know

  • You’ll need a British Gas electricity smart meter to sign up for this tariff. If you don’t have a smart meter - or if you have one fitted by another provider - we’ll upgrade you to one of our smart meters, free of charge
  • To take advantage of this special rate, you’ll need to buy both your gas and electricity from us
  • You’ll have to manage your account online and pay by Direct Debit to sign up for this tariff
  • Planning on moving soon? Unfortunately you can’t take this tariff with you when you move home

Estimated annual costs

  • When you sign up to this tariff, we’ll estimate your annual costs. To do this, we’ll take a look at how much electricity you’ve used in the past. If we can’t find these details, we’ll base our estimate on the average amount EV owners normally use – unless you can give us a more accurate figure
  • As a guide, average EV owners typically charge their vehicles about three times a week during off-peak hours, and twice a fortnight during peak hours using 10kWh of electricity a time
  • The estimate we give you will assume that 38% of the electricity you use is during off-peak hours
  • If you’ve had your EV for under a year, regularly charge your car during peak times or use significantly higher or lower amounts of electricity than the average EV owner, your actual yearly costs could be significantly different to our estimate

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a Smart Meter?

A Smart Meter tells us exactly when you’re using your electricity. We need to know how much energy you’re using during the day AND during the cheaper night time hours so that we can give you an accurate bill.

How do I sign up?

Simply call 0333 009 5757[1] to find out more and switch onto this tariff.

What if it’s not possible for me to get a Smart Meter in my home?

When you call us to sign up, we’ll ask you a few questions so that we can make sure you’re able to get a Smart Meter in your home before you switch tariff.

Sometimes we won’t find out that we can’t fit your Smart Meter until our engineer comes to install one. If this happens, you can stay on the Green Drive Nov 2020 tariff, but you won’t get the cheaper night time rate. However, it probably makes sense to switch to another tariff – just give us a call and we’ll be happy to recommend one.

Does this tariff work for Economy 7?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with Economy 7. If you switched to this tariff, your storage heaters wouldn’t work properly so it’s better for you to stay on a special E7 tariff.

What happens when I move home?

We’ll need to take you off the tariff when you move home because this tariff is tied to your Smart Meter – and you don’t take your Smart Meter with you when you move. Once you’ve moved home, just give us a call and we’ll look into signing you up for this tariff again.

Do I need a gas Smart Meter?

We would always recommend fitting a gas Smart Meter, but in the case of the Green Drive Nov 2020 tariff you only need an electricity Smart Meter. If you wish to install a gas Smart Meter, please speak with our customer representative when signing up for the Green Drive Nov 2020 tariff.

What if I want to leave this tariff before the 2-year period is up?

You can change to another one of our tariffs or another energy supplier at any time. We won’t charge you any exit fees.

Is my daytime rate higher to offset the night time rate?

We’ve tried to keep the daytime rate as close as possible to our normal electricity rates for a 2-year fixed tariff. Instead, we’re reducing your night time rate by passing on the cheaper cost of electricity that we get during those night time hours.

Does this tariff work with solar panels?

Yes, we fit Smart Meters for customers with solar panels and micro generation equipment in their home.
