Frequently asked questions

What happens if they don't work?

When your smart meters are fitted, your engineer will test your metering equipment, along with your electricity and gas, to make sure it's all working properly. They’ll also set up your smart energy monitor and show you how it all works. If there’s a problem, our engineers can visit you, so repairs can be made as soon as possible.

Are smart meters accurate?

Smart meters are just as accurate as your traditional gas and electricity meters, if not more so. All smart meters undergo a rigorous testing process to ensure they’re compliant with UK and EU legislation.

How do I move suppliers if I have a smart meter?

You can switch energy supplier at any time and we’ll do everything we can to make sure you keep the benefits of smart metering. However, this service may be limited, or not supported by the new supplier. We’ll be rolling out second-generation SMETS2 smart meters soon, which means you’ll stay smart even if you switch energy suppliers. If you’ve got one of our SMETS1 meters – we’ll look to upgrade your meter remotely as soon as possible.

What’s the benefit of smart meters for customers?

Once you have a smart meter, you’ll find it easier to control the amount of energy you use by setting energy budgets – which will help you lower your bills. And you don’t have to send us meter readings to get accurate bills – it happens automatically.

How much will a smart meter increase costs for me?

They’re free to install as part of the government’s 2020 smart meter rollout. Just like the cost of the meters you have now or any cost of delivering energy to you, all form part of your bill. So, having a smart meter won't cost any more than your current meter.

How do I know if I can get smart meters fitted in my home?

When you book your smart meter installation online or contact us, we check to see if we can install a smart meter in your home and let you know.
